Abstract

Devices and methods for less invasively treating the gastrointestinal system, such as the intestinal mucosa of the small bowel. Embodiments described herein may be used to reduce caloric absorption and effectuate weight loss, for example.

Claims (29)

1 . A medical method, comprising:

providing an ingestible capsule;

activating the capsule to deliver a therapy to the intestinal mucosa; and

deactivating the capsule.

2 . A medical method as in claim 1 , wherein activating the capsule causes malabsorption of the intestinal mucosa.

3 . A medical method as in claim 2 , wherein activating the capsule compromises the intestinal mucosa, but spares the submucosa.

4 . A medical method as in claim 2 , wherein activating the capsule comprises delivering a coating material to block the mucosa.

5 . A medical method as in claim 2 , wherein activating the capsule comprises delivering a chemical to injure the mucosa.

6 . A medical method as in claim 2 , wherein activating the capsule comprises exposing the mucosa to thermal energy.

7 . A medical method as in claim 2 , wherein activating the capsule comprises exposing the mucosa to radioactive radiation.

8 . A medical method as in claim 2 , wherein activating the capsule comprises exposing the mucosa to ultrasonic energy.

9 . A medical method as in claim 2 , wherein activating the capsule comprises exposing the mucosa to light energy.

10 . A method of compromising nutrient absorption of the intestinal mucosa comprising shielding the epithelial layer from exposure to food nutrients in the intestinal lumen.

11 . A method of compromising nutrient absorption of the intestinal mucosa comprising compromising the diffusion or transport mechanism of the absorptive cells.

12 . A method of compromising nutrient absorption of the intestinal mucosa comprising compromising the transport of nutrients through the lacteals.

13 . A method of compromising nutrient absorption of the intestinal mucosa comprising compromising the transport of nutrients through the venous microvasculature.

14 . A method of compromising nutrient absorption of the intestinal mucosa comprising compromising the transport of oxygenated blood through the arterial microvasculature to render the villi dysfunctional.

15 . A method of compromising nutrient absorption of the intestinal mucosa comprising compromising the regeneration of absorptive cells by the crypts.

16 . A method of compromising nutrient absorption of the intestinal mucosa comprising causing premature necrosis or sloughing of the absorptive cells.

17 . A method of compromising nutrient absorption of the intestinal mucosa comprising:

systemically or locally delivering a photosensitive or photoactivated agent into the arterial vasculature supplying the intestinal mucosa; and

exposing the intestinal mucosa to light to activate the agent.

18 . A method of compromising nutrient absorption of the intestinal mucosa comprising:

administering an active agent to compromise the intestinal mucosa; and

subsequently administering a neutralizing or diluting agent.

19 . A method as in claim 18 , wherein the step of administering the active agent comprises ingesting a capsule.

20 . A method as in claim 18 , wherein the step of administering the active agent comprises infusing the agent though an intraintestinal catheter.

21 . A method of compromising nutrient absorption of the intestinal mucosa comprising intravascularly delivering a micro-occlusive agent to the arterial vasculature supplying the intestinal mucosa.

22 . A method as in claim 21 , wherein the micro-occlusive agent comprises occlusion beads.
