Abstract

Control systems and methods for delivery of energy that may include control algorithms that prevent energy delivery if a fault is detected and may provide energy delivery to produce a substantially constant temperature at a delivery site. In some embodiments, the control systems and methods may be used to control the delivery of energy, such as radiofrequency energy, to body tissue, such as lung tissue.

Claims (18)

1. A method for delivering activation energy to tissue of an airway of a lung in a patient via a therapeutic energy delivery device having an electrode configured to contact tissue of the airway and a temperature sensor carried by the electrode to sense a temperature associated with the tissue, an energy generator coupled to the energy delivery device, and a controller coupled to the energy generator, the method comprising:

providing a user interface having a system ready indicator and an energy delivery device indicator, wherein the system ready indicator is configured to emit a first color when the system is in a ready state and a second color when the system is in a standby state, and wherein the energy delivery device indicator has a graphical representation configured to represent at least a portion of the energy delivery device;

detecting whether the energy delivery device is electrically coupled to the user interface, wherein the controller causes the system ready indicator to emit the second color indicating the standby state if the energy delivery device is not connected to the user interface;

sensing an ambient temperature via the temperature sensor carried by the electrode before inserting the energy delivery device into a patient, wherein the controller causes the energy delivery device indicator to emit light when a sensed value of the ambient temperature is not within a pre-determined range;

activating the system ready indicator to emit the first color after performing the detecting and sensing procedures when the energy delivery device is connected to the user interface and the sensed ambient temperature is within the pre-determined range;

positioning the electrode of the energy delivery device into the patient in contact with the tissue within the airway;

activating a switch that initiates delivery of energy to tissue within the airway of the lung; and

sensing a temperature associated with tissue within the airway of the lung via the temperature sensor carried by the electrode and illuminating the energy delivery device indicator if the sensed temperature in the airway of the lung is not within the predetermined range.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising precluding activation of the energy generator when the system ready indicator is emitting the second color indicating the standby state.

3. A method for delivering activation energy to tissue in a patient via a therapeutic energy delivery device having an electrode configured to contact the tissue and a temperature sensor carried by the electrode, an energy generator coupled to the energy delivery device, and a controller coupled to the energy generator, the method comprising:

providing a user interface having a system ready indicator and an energy delivery device indicator, wherein the system ready indicator is configured to emit a first color when the system is in a ready state and a second color when the system is in a standby state, and wherein the energy delivery device indicator has a graphical representation configured to represent at least a portion of the energy delivery device including a first component configured to emit a first light and a second component configured to emit a second light separately from the first light;

detecting whether the energy delivery device is electrically coupled to the user interface, wherein the controller causes the system ready indicator to emit the second color indicating the standby state if the energy delivery device is not connected to the user interface;

sensing an ambient temperature via the temperature sensor carried by the electrode before inserting the energy delivery device into a patient;

positioning the electrode of the energy delivery device into the patient;

activating a switch that initiates delivery of energy to tissue within the airway of the lung;

wherein the controller causes the first component of the energy delivery device indicator to emit the first light when the sensed temperature provided by the temperature sensor carried by the electrode is not within a pre-determined temperature range indicating that the temperature sensor is not operable and the energy delivery device should be replaced; and

wherein the controller causes the second component of the energy delivery device indicator to emit the second light when the sensed impedance is greater than a pre-determined impedance level indicating that the electrode should be redeployed.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the pre-determined temperature range is about 15° C. to 30° C. and the pre-determined impedance level is at least about 900 Ohms.
