Abstract

A tissue penetration device and method of using same that may include a lancet module or sampling module. The sampling module may optionally be in a cartridge configuration and include sampling and analyzing functions, which may be integrated.

Claims (23)

1. A sampling module, comprising:

a module body portion that includes a lancet channel;

a lancet with a sharpened distal tip and shaft portion which is slidably disposed within the lancet channel to provide for a lancet to travel in a linear axial movement;

a sterility barrier that is pierceable by the lancet; and

a sample chamber in fluid communication with a sample input port of the module body portion wherein the sample chamber has a volume no greater than 1 microliter.

2. The module of claim 1 , wherein the sample chamber includes a vent.

3. The module of claim 1 , further comprising:

a mechanical stop positioned to provide a soft stop for the lancet.

4. The module of claim 1 , wherein the module body is configured to be coupled to a lancet driver that provides controlled velocity of the lancet as the lancet travels.

5. A sampling module, comprising:

a module body portion configured to be mechanically registered and secured adjacent to a lancet driver;

a lancet with a sharpened distal tip and shaft portion which is slidably disposed within the module body portion;

a sterility barrier that is pierceable by the lancet; and

a sample chamber in fluid communication with a sample input port of the module body portion wherein the sample chamber has a volume no greater than 1 microliter.

6. The module of claim 5 , wherein the sample chamber has a vent.

7. The module of claim 5 , further comprising:

a mechanical stop positioned to provide a soft stop for the lancet.

8. A sampling module, comprising:

a module body portion configured to be mechanically registered and secured adjacent to a lancet driver;

a lancet with a sharpened distal tip and shaft portion which is slidably disposed within the module body portion;

a sterility barrier that is pierceable by the lancet; and

a sample chamber in fluid communication with a sample input port of the module body portion wherein the sample chamber has a volume no greater than 1 microliter; and

wherein a velocity of a lancet is controlled as the lancet travels from the sampling module.
