Abstract

A switch which is magnetic pole insensitive is described. The switch includes a Hall effect sensor coupled to a threshold circuit which provides an output signal indicative of the proximity of a magnet, and hence a magnetic field, to the Hall effect sensor regardless of the orientation of the magnet to the Hall effect sensor.

Claims (19)

1. An apparatus for providing a signal indicative of the proximity of a magnetic article, comprising:

a magnetic field sensor for providing a magnetic field signal having a level proportional to a sensed magnetic field and a polarity that is a function of the polarity of the sensed magnetic field; and

a detector responsive to the magnetic field signal for providing a detector output signal indicative of whether the magnetic article is within a predetermined distance of the detector regardless of the orientation of the magnetic article relative to the detector, the detector comprising:

a comparator responsive to the magnetic field signal for comparing the magnetic field signal to a first threshold level and a second threshold level to provide the detector output signal at a first signal level when the magnetic article is within the predetermined distance of the detector regardless of the polarity of sensed magnetic field, wherein the comparator comprises a window comparator operable to provide the detector output signal at the first signal level if the magnetic field signal is either greater than the first threshold level or less than the second threshold level and at a second signal level if the magnetic field signal is less than the first threshold level and greater than the second threshold level, wherein the first threshold level changes to a third threshold level in to the detector output signal changing from the first signal level to the second signal level and wherein the second threshold level changes to a fourth threshold level in response to the detector output signal changing from the second signal level to the first signal level; and

a single circuit for establishing the first threshold level and the second threshold level.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the magnetic field sensor comprises a Hall effect device.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the single circuit comprises a resistor divider, wherein the first threshold level is provided at a first node of the resistor divider and the second threshold level is provided at a second node of the resistor divider.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the detector further comprises a bias circuit coupled to the comparator for maintaining operating signals in the comparator within a predetermined range of operating signal levels in response to changes in at least one of supply voltage or temperature.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the window comparator comprises first and second differential pair circuits, each having an input terminal coupled to one of a pair of outputs of the magnetic field sensor and an output terminal coupled to an output terminal of the comparator.

6. An apparatus comprising:

a first element;

a second element movably coupled to the first element;

a magnetic article coupled to a selected one of the first element or the second element; and

a switch coupled to the other one of the first element or the second element to provide a detector output signal indicative of the proximity of the first element and the second element, the switch comprising:

a magnetic field sensor for providing a magnetic field signal having a level proportional to a sensed magnetic field and a polarity that is a function of the polarity of the magnetic field; and

a comparator responsive to the magnetic field signal for comparing the magnetic field signal to a first threshold level and a second threshold level to provide the detector output signal at a first signal level when the magnetic article is within the predetermined distance of the detector regardless of the polarity of sensed magnetic field, wherein the comparator comprises a window comparator operable to provide the detector output signal at the first signal level if the magnetic field signal is either greater than the first threshold level or less than the second threshold level and at a second signal level if the magnetic field signal is less than the first threshold level and greater than the second threshold level, wherein the first threshold level changes to a third threshold level in response to the detector output signal changing from the first signal level to the second signal level and wherein the second threshold level changes to a fourth threshold level in response to the detector output signal changing from the second signal level to the first signal level.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the switch further comprises a single circuit for establishing the first threshold level and the second threshold level.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the single circuit comprises a resistor divider, wherein the first threshold level is provided at a first node of the resistor divider and the second threshold level is provided at a second node of the resistor divider.

9. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the switch further comprises a bias circuit coupled to the comparator for maintaining operating signals in the comparator within a predetermined range of operating signal levels in response to changes in at least one of supply voltage or temperature.
