Abstract

In certain embodiments, a vial adaptor for removing liquid contents from a vial comprises a piercing member and a bag. The bag can be contained within the piercing member such that the bag is introduced to the vial when the vial adaptor is coupled with the vial. In some embodiments, the bag expands within the vial as liquid is removed from the vial via the adaptor, thereby regulating pressure within the vial. In other embodiments, a vial comprises a bag for regulating pressure within the vial as liquid is removed therefrom. In some embodiments, a vial adaptor is coupled with the vial in order to remove the liquid. In some embodiments, as the liquid is removed from the vial via the adaptor, the bag expands within the vial, and in other embodiments, the bag contracts within the vial.

Claims (23)

1. An adaptor for coupling with a previously sealed vial and for generally maintaining a pressure within the vial as contents are removed therefrom, the adaptor comprising:

a base having a sheath extending therefrom;

a flexible receptacle;

a first channel formed in the sheath, the first channel housing at least a portion of the receptacle and configured to be in fluid communication with an environment separate from the contents of the vial; and

a second channel formed in the sheath, the second channel configured to allow at least a portion of the contents of the vial to be removed therethrough,

wherein the receptacle is configured to expand and accommodate inflow from the environment in response to pressure changes within the vial as fluid is removed from the vial such that the environment remains separate from the contents of the vial, and

wherein the sheath is configured to position the receptacle within the sealed vial when the adaptor is coupled to the vial.

2. The adaptor of claim 1 , further comprising a tip extending from a distal end of the sheath, wherein the tip is configured to pierce a cap of the vial.

3. The adaptor of claim 2 , wherein the tip is configured to pierce an elastomeric septum disposed within the cap of the vial.

4. The adaptor of claim 2 , wherein at least a portion of the tip is substantially conical.

5. The adaptor of claim 2 , wherein at least a portion of the tip is constructed from a material selected from the group consisting of acrylic plastic, ABS plastic, and polycarbonate plastic.

6. The adaptor of claim 2 , wherein the tip is friction fit within an end of the sheath.

7. The vial adaptor of claim 1 , further comprising a cap connector configured to conform to the shape of a cap of the vial.

8. The vial adaptor of claim 7 , wherein the cap connector comprises a rigid material that substantially maintains an original shape after minor deformations.

9. The vial adaptor of claim 7 , wherein the cap connector is constructed from material comprising polycarbonate plastic.

10. The vial adaptor of claim 7 , wherein the cap connector comprises a sleeve configured to snap over a ridge formed in the cap in order to facilitate tight engagement with the cap.

11. The vial adaptor of claim 1 , wherein the flexible receptacle is a balloon.

12. The vial adaptor of claim 1 , wherein the environment separate from the contents of the vial is the ambient air surrounding the adaptor.

13. The vial adaptor of claim 1 , wherein interaction between the receptacle and the environment is configured to cause the pressure within the vial before withdrawal of liquid within the vial to be essentially the same as the pressure within the vial after withdrawal of said liquid.

14. The vial adaptor of claim 1 , wherein the receptacle is initially positioned within the sheath.

15. The vial adaptor of claim 14 , wherein the receptacle is configured to emerge from the sheath within the vial as liquid is withdrawn from the vial.

16. The vial adaptor of claim 6 , wherein the tip is configured to be ejected from the sheath.

17. The vial adaptor of claim 16 , wherein the ejection of the tip is configured to occur upon initiation of liquid withdrawal from the vial.
