Abstract

A positioning device without backlash includes a table and at least one gear operatively associated with the table. At least one worm gear is connected to the gear and the gear is driven in a desired direction with a primary motor and a synchronized slave motor. The synchronized slave motor is then reversible to remove the backlash in the positioning device thereby permitting an actual position to correspond with a dialed-in position.

Claims (19)

1. A method for eliminating backlash in a pan and tilt device having a table, the method comprising:

associating a first worm gear and a second worm gear with a drive gear;

connecting a primary motor to the first worm gear and a slave motor to the second worm gear;

moving the drive gear in a desired direction of motion with the primary motor and the slave motor to pan or tilt the table of the pan and tilt device to a desired position;

stopping the drive gear in the desired position; and

moving the slave motor in a reverse motion relative to the desired direction of motion to lock the pan and tilt device.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

synchronizing the primary motor and the slave motor in the desired direction of motion.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

moving the slave motor in the reverse motion until a desired torque value in the drive gear is obtained.

4. A method for reducing backlash in a pan and tilt device having a table, the method comprising:

using a drive motor to advance a first worm gear associated with a drive gear within the pan and tilt device to pan or tilt the table of the pan and tilt device into a desired position; and

using a slave motor to reverse a second worm gear associated with the drive gear until a desired torque value is obtained.

5. The method of claim 4 further comprising:

communicating a relative position of the slave motor to the drive motor.

6. The method of claim 4 further comprising:

synchronizing the slave motor with the drive motor in a desired direction of motion.

7. The method of claim 6 further comprising:

uncinching a fixed position of the positioning device by locating a center position of the slave motor relative to the drive gear.
