Abstract

An electrophoretic display device includes a display layer of a multiplicity of individual microcapsules containing a display medium therein and conductive substrates, at least one of the conductive substrates being transparent, wherein the display layer is located in between the conductive substrates, and wherein the display medium includes one or more set of colored particles in a dielectric fluid and has an electric conductivity of about 10 −11 to about 10 −15 S/m. The microcapsules may be made by encapsulating the display medium in the wall forming material of the microcapsules, and for example a complex coacervation process may be used.

2. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1 , wherein the microcapsules have an average diameter of from about 5 microns to about 400 microns.

3. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1 , wherein the microcapsules are fixed to one or both of the conductive substrates.

4. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1 , wherein the microcapsules are derived from melamine-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde, resorcinol-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde, gelatin-formaldehyde, isocyanate-polyol, interpolymer complexes of gelatin/gum arabic, gelatin/polyphosphate, interpolymer complexes of poly(styrene sulfonic acid)/gelatin, hydroxypropyl cellulose, or combinations thereof.

5. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1 , wherein the microcapsules have a multi-layer wall comprising an inner wall comprised of polyurea, polyurethane, polyamide, polyester, epoxy-amine condensates, silicones or combinations thereof, and an outer wall comprised of condensates of melamine-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde, resorcinol-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde or gelatin-formaldehyde, interpolymer complexes of gelatin gum arabic or of poly(styrene sulfonic acid)/gelatin, or combinations thereof.

6. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1 , wherein the device is flexible and the conductive substrates comprise a polymer film coated with a conductive material.

7. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1 , wherein the microcapsules are adhered between the conductive substrates with an adhesive.

8. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1 , wherein the microcapsules are arranged in a monolayer between the conductive substrates.

9. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more set of colored particles comprises polyester emulsion aggregation particles or acrylate emulsion aggregation particles.

10. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 9 , wherein the one or more set of particles has an average particle size of from about 0.5 to about 25 μm, an upper geometric standard deviation (GSD) by volume for (D84/D50) is in the range of from about 1.1 to about 1.25, and an average circularity of about 0.92 to about 0.99.

11. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1 , wherein the display medium comprises one set of colored particles in a colored dielectric fluid.

12. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1 , wherein the display medium comprises a set of black particles and a set of white particles.
