Abstract

An automatic card shuffler includes a card input unit, card ejection unit, card separation and delivery unit and card collection unit. A card ejection unit ejects cards in a singular fashion from a stack of cards placed into the input unit. The cards are ejected to a stop arm maintaining the entrance to the card separation unit. Adjustment means permit the shuffler to accommodate different sized cards. Upon processor command, the stop arm raises to allow a plurality of cards to pass under to the card separation and delivery unit. A series of rotating belts and rollers act to separate the cards and propel them individually to the collection unit. By utilizing separate motors to drive the belts and rollers it is possible to cease the movement of the belts so that the rollers independently act upon the cards. A floating gate slightly forward of the stop arm dictates that a minimum number of cards are managed simultaneously. The shuffler is controlled by a processing unit in communication with multiple internal sensors. An audio system communicates voice outputs regarding shuffler malfunctions and instructions to an operator.

Claims (33)

1. An apparatus for providing a plurality of randomly arranged playing cards comprising:

a card delivery and separation unit having a support body;

a substantially planar card traveling surface defined within the support body configured for receiving and supporting one or more cards thereon;

a lowered powered belt mounted within the support body and extending adjacently along a section of the card traveling surface, wherein the belt is positioned to contact cards received by the card traveling surface and transport the cards;

upper and lower powered rollers mounted within the support body and positioned adjacent to the card traveling surface to engage a card transported by the powered belt by contact with opposing sides of the card, wherein the upper and lower powered rollers operate to propel the card from the card delivery and separation unit; and

a card collection tray mounted adjacent to the card delivery and separation unit and configured for receiving the card propelled by the upper and lower powered rollers,

wherein the card traveling surface includes a sloped portion configured to facilitate guiding cards into contact with the lower powered belt and wherein the lowered powered belt deactivates upon a card being engaged by the upper and lower powered rollers and reactivates upon the card being received by the card collection tray.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the upper rollers and lower rollers are powered by the same motor and the lower belts are powered by a separate motor.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the lower belts are powered by a stepper motor.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 further comprising means to intermittently cease the lower belts so that only the upper and lower powered rollers act upon a subject card in the card delivery unit.

5. The apparatus of claim 3 further comprising one or more sensors, wherein output from said one or more sensors dictates operation of the stepper motor.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a card moving unit connected with the support body for moving cards to card traveling surface.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the card moving unit comprises a card randomizing device for providing one or more cards in a random sequence to be received by the card traveling surface.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the card moving unit is a random card ejection device.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising means for controlling the transport of cards received and supported by the card traveling surface by the lower powered belt.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an arm mounted adjacent to the card traveling surface, wherein the arm is configured for pivotal motion to alternately prevent and allow the transport of one or more cards by the lower powered belt.

11. An apparatus for providing a plurality of randomly arranged playing cards comprising:

a card delivery and separation unit having a support body;

a substantially planar card traveling surface defined within the support body configured for receiving and supporting one or more cards thereon;

a lowered powered belt mounted within the support body and extending adjacently along a section of the card traveling surface, wherein the belt is positioned to contact cards received by the card traveling surface and transport the cards along the section;

an upper roller mounted adjacent the section and positioned to contact the opposing sides of cards transported by the belt;

upper and lower powered rollers mounted within the support body and positioned adjacent to the card traveling surface to engage a card transported by the powered belt along the section by contact with opposing sides of the card, wherein the upper and lower powered rollers operate to propel the card from the card delivery and separation unit; and

a card collection tray mounted adjacent to the card delivery and separation unit and configured for receiving the card propelled by the upper and lower powered rollers,

wherein the card traveling surface includes a sloped portion configured to facilitate guiding cards into contact with the lower powered belt and wherein the lowered powered belt deactivates upon a card being engaged by the upper and lower powered rollers and reactivates upon the card being received by the card collection tray.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the upper rollers and lower rollers are powered by the same motor and the lower belts are powered by a separate motor.

13. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the lower belts are powered by a stepper motor.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 further comprising means to intermittently cease the lower belts so that only the upper and lower powered rollers act upon a subject card in the card delivery unit.

15. The apparatus of claim 13 further comprising one or more sensors, wherein output from said one or more sensors dictates operation of the stepper motor.

16. The apparatus of claim 11 further comprising a card moving unit connected with the support body for moving cards to card traveling surface.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the card moving unit comprises a card randomizing device for providing one or more cards in a random sequence to be received by the card traveling surface.

18. The apparatus of claim 16 wherein the card moving unit is a random card ejection device.

19. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the upper roller is biased to exert a force on the cards transported by the lower powered belts.

20. The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising an arm mounted adjacent to the card traveling surface, wherein the arm is configured for pivotal motion to alternately prevent and allow the transport of one or more cards by the lower powered belt.
