Abstract

A composition of matter comprising an article derived from a composition containing: a. from about 30 to 80 wt. % of a polycarbonate component, b. from about 5 to about 50 wt. % of a polyester component, wherein when polybutylene terephthalate is present in the composition, the polybutylene terephthalate is present in conjunction with at least one other polyester that is not polybutylene terephthalate; c. about 2 to about 25 wt. % of an impact modifier; and d. a gloss reducing effective amount of a multifunctional additive comprising at least one epoxy group. The invention also includes injection molding processes, thermoforming processes for making articles.

Claims (31)

1 . A composition of matter comprising an article derived from a composition containing:

a. from about 30 to 80 wt. % of a polycarbonate component,

b. from about 5 to about 50 wt. % of a polyester component, wherein when polybutylene terephthalate is present in the composition, the polybutylene terephthalate is present in conjunction with at least one other polyester that is not polybutylene terephthalate;

c. about 2 to about 25 wt. % of an impact modifier; and

d. a gloss reducing effective amount of a multifunctional additive comprising at least one epoxy group.

2 . The composition of matter in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the polycarbonate is from about 45 to 75 wt. %, the polyester is from about 10 to about 45 wt. % and the impact modifier is from about 4 to about 20 wt. %.

3 . The composition of matter in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the multifunctional additive is present in an amount that is at least about 0.1 wt. %.

4 . The composition of matter of claim 3 , wherein the wherein the multifunctional additive is present in an amount that is less than about 5.0 wt %.

5 . The composition of matter of claim 4 , wherein the viscosity of the composition is less than about 500 Pa-s at 271° C. as measured by capillary rheometry following the ISO 11443 standard.

6 . The composition of matter of claim 4 , wherein the multifunctional additive has an epoxy group and a silane group.

7 . The composition of matter of claim 4 , wherein the multifunctional additive has two epoxy groups.

8 . The composition of matter of claim 1 , wherein the article is an injected molded article.

9 . The composition of matter of claim 1 , wherein the article is a thermoformed article.

10 . A process for making an article by injection molding comprising:

(a) heating a composition to a temperature that is at least the melting point of the composition to a viscous liquid

(b) injecting the viscous liquid under pressure into a mold cavity dimensioned to the length, width, and height of a the article, and

(c) allowing the injection molded article to cool and solidify into the article,

(d) removing the article from the mold cavity; wherein composition comprises:

1 ) from about 30 to 80 wt. % of a polycarbonate component,

2) from about 5 to about 50 wt. % of a polyester component, wherein when polybutylene terephthalate is present in the composition, the polybutylene terephthalate is present in conjunction with at least one other polyester that is not polybutylene terephthalate;

3 ) from about 2 to about 25 wt. % of an impact modifier; and

4 ) a gloss reducing effective amount of a multifunctional additive comprising at least one epoxy group.

11 . A thermo-forming process for making an article comprising:

(a) extruding a sheet having at least one layer from a composition comprising:

( 1 ) from about 30 to 80 wt. % of a polycarbonate component,

(5) from about 5 to about 50 wt. % of a polyester component, wherein when polybutylene terephthalate is present in the composition, the polybutylene terephthalate is present in conjunction with at least one other polyester that is not polybutylene terephthalate;

(6) about 2 to about 25 wt. % of an impact modifier; and

(7) a gloss reducing effective amount of a multifunctional additive comprising at least one epoxy group.

(b) heating the sheet to a temperature sufficient to soften the sheet,

(c) applying the sheet over a mold dimensioned to the length, width, and height of the article,

(d) cooling and removing the article from the mold.
