Abstract

Interference caused by the propagation of a transmit signal transmitted from a transmit antenna to a receive antenna is effectively cancelled by an improved signal cancellation system. The system includes an interference cancellation signal generator that generates a time-delayed and amplitude-reduced representation of said transmit signal. A summing stage is operably coupled to the interference cancellation signal generator and the receive antenna. The summing stage subtracts the time-delayed and amplitude-reduced representation of the transmit signal from a receive signal to substantially cancel the interference. The interference cancellation signal generator preferably includes a novel programmable optical delay line that introduces a variable amount of optical delay to an optical signal derived from said transmit signal in addition to a thyristor-based sigma delta modulator that converts samples of the transmit signal to into a digital signal in the optical domain.

Claims (20)

1. An integrated circuit comprising:

a network of on-chip passive waveguides and two-channel directional couplers, each respective two-channel directional coupler employing evanescent coupling for switching of optical signals between two channels through the respective directional coupler, said two-channel directional couplers realized from a plurality of layers formed on a substrate, said layers comprising at least one modulation doped quantum well structure.

2. An integrated circuit according to claim 1 , wherein:

optical signals are selectively switched between the two channels through a given directional coupler based upon voltage levels applied to gate and source terminals for said given directional coupler.

3. An integrated circuit according to claim 2 , wherein:

said two channels through a given directional coupler are separated by a narrow passive region formed via impurity free vacancy disordering.

4. An integrated circuit according to claim 1 , further comprising:

at least two optical amplifiers, operably coupled to said network, said optical amplifiers realized from said plurality of layers formed on said substrate.

5. An integrated circuit according to claim 1 , wherein:

said on-chip passive waveguides include first segments and second segments that extend between respective pairs of directional couplers, wherein said first segments have a first optical path length and said second segments have a second optical path length, said first optical path length significantly smaller than said second optical path length.

6. An integrated circuit according to claim 5 , wherein:

said first segments extend in a substantially linear fashion.

7. An integrated circuit according to claim 5 , wherein:

said second segments extend in a substantially U-shaped fashion.

8. An integrated circuit according to claim 1 , wherein:

said layers include two complementary-type modulation doped quantum well structures vertically spaced apart from one another.

9. An integrated circuit according to claim 8 , wherein:

said two complementary-type modulation doped quantum well structures comprise an n-type modulation doped quantum well structure formed below a p-type modulation doped quantum well structure.

10. An integrated circuit according to claim 9 , wherein:

said layers include an undoped spacer layers disposed between said n-type modulation doped quantum well structure formed below a p-type modulation doped quantum well structure.
