Abstract

An imaging device includes a photographing optical system including an image pick-up device; a memory for storing object brightness data obtained via the image pick-up device; a polarizing filter which varies a polarized state of light incident on the image pick-up device in accordance with a rotational angle thereof; and a rotational position controller which controls the rotational angle of the polarizing filter. The memory stores the object brightness data, that varies by rotation of the polarizing filter, in a preliminary rotating operation of the polarizing filter performed by the rotational position controller. The rotational position controller rotates the polarizing filter to a target position thereof at which a target object brightness is obtained in accordance with the object brightness data stored in the memory.

Claims (31)

1 . An imaging device comprising:

a photographing optical system including an image pick-up device;

a memory for storing object brightness data obtained via said image pick-up device;

a polarizing filter which varies a polarized state of light incident on said image pick-up device in accordance with a rotational angle thereof; and

a rotational position controller which controls said rotational angle of said polarizing filter;

wherein said memory stores said object brightness data, that varies by rotation of said polarizing filter, in a preliminary rotating operation of said polarizing filter performed by said rotational position controller; and

wherein said rotational position controller rotates said polarizing filter to a target position thereof at which a target object brightness is obtained in accordance with said object brightness data stored in said memory.

2 . The imaging device according to claim 1 , wherein said rotational position controller rotates said polarizing filter through 180 degrees in said preliminary rotating operation, and

wherein said rotational position controller rotates said polarizing filter to said target position in a subsequent rotation within 180 degrees.

3 . The imaging device according to claim 1 , wherein said rotational position controller comprises a pulse motor for rotating said polarizing filter,

wherein said rotational position controller calculates a number of drive pulses for driving said pulse motor to said target position in accordance with said object brightness data stored in said memory, and drives said pulse motor to rotate said polarizing filter by said calculated number of drive pulses after completion of said preliminary rotating operation.

4 . The imaging device according to claim 1 , wherein said object brightness data is stored in said memory at each of different angles of rotation of said polarizing filter during said preliminary rotating operation.

5 . The imaging device according to claim 4 , wherein said rotational position controller sets one of said different angles of rotation of said polarizing filter at which a minimum brightness is obtained as said target position.

6 . The imaging device according to claim 4 , wherein said rotational position controller sets one of said different angles of rotation of said polarizing filter at which a medium brightness between a maximum brightness and a minimum brightness is obtained as said target position.

7 . The imaging device according to claim 1 , further comprising a mechanism for selectively inserting and removing said polarizing filter into and from an optical path of said photographing optical system.

8 . A digital camera comprising:

a polarizing filter rotatable in an optical path of a photographing optical system including an image pick-up device, wherein a polarized state of light incident on said image pick-up device is varied in accordance with a rotational angle of said polarizing filter;

a memory for storing object brightness data obtained via said image pick-up device; and

a rotational position controller which rotates said polarizing filter to store said object brightness data, that varies by rotation of said polarizing filter, at each of different rotational positions of said polarizing filter during a preliminarily rotating operation, and automatically rotates said polarizing filter to a target position thereof at which a target object brightness is obtained in accordance with said object brightness data stored in said memory.

9 . A method of controlling rotation of a polarizing filter of an imaging device, said polarizing filter varying a polarized state of light incident on an image pick-up device in accordance with a rotational angle thereof, said method comprising:

rotating said polarizing filter through 180 degrees to store object brightness data that varies by said 180-degree rotation of said polarizing filter, in memory in a preliminary rotating operation; and

automatically rotating said polarizing filter to a target position thereof at which a target object brightness is obtained in the subsequent rotation of 180 degrees in accordance with said object brightness data stored in said memory.

10 . The method of controlling rotation of a polarizing filter of an imaging device according to claim 9 , comprising:

calculating a number of drive pulses for driving a pulse motor to said target position in accordance with said object brightness data stored in said memory, and

driving said pulse motor to rotate said polarizing filter by said calculated number of drive pulses after completion of said preliminary rotating operation.

11 . The method of controlling rotation of a polarizing filter of an imaging device according to claim 9 , comprising:

storing said object brightness data in said memory at each of different angles of rotation of said polarizing filter during said preliminary rotating operation.

12 . The method of controlling rotation of a polarizing filter of an imaging device according to claim 11 , comprising:

setting one of said different angles of rotation of said polarizing filter at which a minimum brightness is obtained as said target position.

13 . The method of controlling rotation of a polarizing filter of an imaging device according to claim 11 , comprising:

setting one of said different angles of rotation of said polarizing filter at which a medium brightness between a maximum brightness and a minimum brightness is obtained as said target position.
