Abstract

A method for providing a coated transparency, includes the steps of: (a) providing a transparency having a vision area and a non-vision area; and (b) applying a sound dampening coating composition to at least a portion of the non-vision area of the transparency. Where the coating composition is a polyurea coating composition, the coating composition can be formed from a reaction mixture including an isocyanate-functional component and an amine-functional component, wherein the ratio of equivalents of isocyanate groups to equivalents of amine groups is greater than 1, while the volume mixing ratio of the isocyanate-functional component to the amine-functional component is capable of being applied to a substrate at 1:1.

Claims (33)

1 . A method for providing a coated transparency, comprising the steps of:

a) providing a transparency having a vision area and a non-vision area; and

b) applying a sound dampening coating composition to at least a portion of the non-vision area of the transparency.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the coating composition is selected from (a) a polyurea coating composition, (b) an aqueous dispersion of polymeric microparticles, and (c) an epoxy-based coating composition.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the coating composition is a polyurea coating composition, the coating composition being formed from a reaction mixture comprising an isocyanate-functional component and an amine-functional component wherein the ratio of equivalents of isocyanate groups to equivalents of amine groups is greater than 1, while the volume mixing ratio of the isocyanate-functional component to the amine-functional component is capable of being applied to a substrate at 1:1.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein at least 1 percent by weight of the isocyanate-functional component comprises at least one polyisocyanate monomer.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the ratio of equivalents of isocyanate groups to equivalents of amine groups is 1.01 to 1.10:1.0.

6 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the isocyanate-functional component comprises isophorone diisocyanate.

7 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the amine-functional component comprises a primary amine and/or a secondary amine.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the amine-functional component comprises 20-80 weight percent primary amine and the balance secondary amine.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the transparency is a vehicle transparency.

The method of claim 1 , wherein applying comprises depositing a multilayer composite coating on at least a portion of the non-vision area, the multilayer composite coating comprising a first polyurea layer deposited from a first composition, and a second polyurea layer deposited from a second composition, applied over at least a portion of the first polyurea layer, at least one of the first composition and the second composition being formed from a reaction mixture comprising:

(1) an isocyanate component; and

(2) an amine component,

wherein the ratio of equivalents of isocyanate groups to equivalents of amine groups in the reaction mixture is greater than 1, while the volume mixing ratio of the isocyanate-functional component to the amine-functional component is capable of being applied to the vehicle transparency at 1:1.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein at least 1 percent by weight of the isocyanate-functional component comprises at least one polyisocyanate monomer.

12 . A method for forming a textured aesthetic pattern on a vehicle substrate, comprising the steps of:

a) providing a vehicle substrate; and

b) applying a coating composition to at least a portion of the substrate to form a textured aesthetic pattern, wherein the coating composition is a polyurea coating composition, the coating composition being formed from a reaction mixture comprising an isocyanate-functional component and an amine-functional component wherein the ratio of equivalents of isocyanate groups to equivalents of amine groups is greater than 1, while the volume mixing ratio of the isocyanate-functional component to the amine-functional component is capable of being applied to a substrate at 1:1.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the pattern is selected from vehicle identification indicia, decorative patterns, logos, and names.

14 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the vehicle substrate is a vehicle transparency.

15 . A coated transparency, comprising:

a) a transparency having a vision area and a non-vision area; and

b) a sound dampening coating composition applied to at least a portion of the non-vision area of the transparency.

16 . The transparency of claim 14 , wherein the coating composition is selected from (a) a polyurea coating composition, (b) an aqueous dispersion of polymeric microparticles, and (c) an epoxy-based coating composition.

The transparency of claim 15 , wherein the coating composition is a polyurea coating composition, the coating composition being formed from a reaction mixture comprising an isocyanate-functional component and an amine-functional component wherein the ratio of equivalents of isocyanate groups to equivalents of amine groups is greater than 1, while the volume mixing ratio of the isocyanate-functional component to the amine-functional component is capable of being applied to a substrate at 1:1.

The transparency of claim 15 , wherein the sound dampening coating composition comprises a multilayer composite coating formed on at least a portion of the non-vision area, the multilayer composite coating comprising a first polyurea layer deposited from a first composition, and a second polyurea layer deposited from a second composition, applied over at least a portion of the first polyurea layer, at least one of the first composition and the second composition being formed from a reaction mixture comprising:

(1) an isocyanate component; and

(2) an amine component,

wherein the ratio of equivalents of isocyanate groups to equivalents of amine groups in the reaction mixture is greater than 1, while the volume mixing ratio of the isocyanate-functional component to the amine-functional component is capable of being applied to the vehicle transparency at 1:1.

19 . A vehicle substrate having a textured aesthetic pattern, comprising:

a) a vehicle substrate; and

b) a coating composition applied to at least a portion of the substrate to form a textured aesthetic pattern, wherein the coating composition is a polyurea coating composition, the coating composition being formed from a reaction mixture comprising an isocyanate-functional component and an amine-functional component wherein the ratio of equivalents of isocyanate groups to equivalents of amine groups is greater than 1, while the volume mixing ratio of the isocyanate-functional component to the amine-functional component is capable of being applied to a substrate at 1:1.
