Abstract

A flexible diffuser membrane for diffusing gas into a liquid includes a substrate covered wholly or partially by a thin fluorocarbon elastomer coating. The coating is applied after the substrate has been fully constructed and cured. The coating is then mixed with an adhesive catalyst and applied by spraying or in another suitable manner to the substrate. The substrate and coating are then heated to a temperature such as 350° F.-800° F. adequate to form a strong chemical, molecular and adhesive bond between the coating and substrate. Perforations are formed in the membrane, the substrate may be treated with a biocide allowing the uncoated edges of the perforations to be coated with the biocide and resist biological growth.

Claims (19)

1. A process for constructing a flexible diffuser membrane applicable to a diffuser body for diffusing gas into a liquid, said process comprising:

providing a fully cured substrate constructed of a flexible material;

applying a solvent to said substrate to clean it;

mixing with a fluorocarbon elastomer an adhesive catalyst effective to bond said elastomer to said substrate;

applying said fluorocarbon elastomer with said adhesive catalyst directly on a selected surface of said fully cured substrate to coat said surface with said elastomer;

heating said substrate with said elastomer and adhesive catalyst thereon to a selected elevated temperature in the range of about 350° F. to about 800° F.; and

perforating said substrate after said elastomer and adhesive catalyst have been applied thereon to provide perforations having uncoated edges.

2. A process as set forth in claim 1 , including the step of applying a biocidal agent to said substrate in a manner allowing treatment of said uncoated edges with said biocidal agent.

3. A process as set forth in claim 1 , wherein said selected elevated temperature is in the range of approximately 600° F.-700° F.

4. A process as set forth in claim 1 , wherein said substrate has an inside surface and an outside surface and said selected surface comprises both said inside surface and said outside surface.

5. A process for constructing a flexible diffuser membrane applicable to a diffuser body for diffusing gas into a liquid, said process comprising:

providing a flexible substrate that is fully cured and presents a surface for releasing the gas into the liquid;

mixing a fluorocarbon elastomer with an adhesive catalyst to provide a mixture;

applying said mixture directly to said surface of said fully cured substrate;

heating said substrate with said mixture thereon to an elevated temperature in the range of about 350° F. to about 800° F. to effect bonding and sintering of said fluorocarbon elastomer to said surface; and

perforating said surface and said fluorocarbon elastomer after said mixture has been applied to said surface to provide perforations for release of the gas therethrough into the liquid, said perforations having uncoated edges.

6. A process as set forth in claim 5 , including the step of applying a biocidal agent to said substrate in a manner to treat said uncoated edges with the biocidal agent.

7. A process as set forth in claim 5 , including the step of cleaning said substrate surface prior to applying said mixture thereto.

8. A process as set forth in claim 5 , wherein said elevated temperature is between approximately 600° F. and 700° F.
