Abstract

A plurality of approaches for forming a horizontal and vertical electrical device cover including 1) providing hinge members on opposing sides of the cover that allow the cover to pivot along adjacent-sided axes for horizontal and vertical mounting; 2) providing a removable pin and corresponding cover and base hinge members wherein the removable pin may be placed along either the horizontal or vertical axis for selective horizontal or vertical mounting; 3) providing a pivoting hinge arm that is pivotable between adjacent sides of the unit for selective horizontal or vertical mounting; and 4) providing selectively attachable hinge members that may be attached by the installer at the time of installation to choose between horizontal or vertical mounting configurations.

Claims (38)

1. An electrical outlet cover assembly selectively configurable for horizontal and vertical mounting orientations, the cover assembly comprising:

a base;

a lid;

a hinge member arm pivotally coupled to the assembly and being pivotable between a first position and a second position, the hinge member arm having at least one arm hinge member thereon configured to form a hinge when operably coupled together with at least one other hinge member of the assembly, the hinge permitting the lid to open and close with respect to the base; and

wherein when the hinge member arm is in the first position, the hinge is configured to pivot about a first axis, and when the hinge member arm is in the second position, the hinge is configured to pivot about a second axis different from the first axis.

2. The cover assembly of claim 1 , wherein the hinge member arm is pivotally coupled to the assembly on the base, wherein the at least one other hinge member comprises first and second first lid hinge members respectively coupled to the lid on adjacent first and second lid sides, wherein the first lid hinge member is positioned to couple with the arm hinge member in the first position and the second lid hinge member is positioned to couple with the arm hinge member in the second position.

3. The cover assembly of claim 1 , wherein the hinge member arm is pivotally coupled to the assembly on the lid, wherein the at least one other hinge member comprises first and second first base hinge members respectively coupled to the base on adjacent first and second base sides, wherein the first base hinge member is positioned to couple with the arm hinge member in the first position and the second base hinge member is positioned to couple with the arm hinge member in the second position.

4. The cover assembly of claim 1 :

wherein the hinge member arm is pivotally coupled to the assembly on the lid, the assembly further comprising a second hinge member arm pivotally coupled to the assembly on the base;

wherein the base hinge member arm being pivotable between a first position and a second position; and

wherein the at least one other hinge member is at least one hinge member on the base hinge member arm.

5. The cover assembly of claim 1 , wherein the hinge member arm is pivotally coupled to the assembly at a corner of the assembly.

6. The cover assembly of claim 5 , wherein the first axis is substantially parallel to a first side of the assembly and the second axis is substantially parallel to a second side of the assembly substantially perpendicular to the first side.

7. The cover assembly of claim 1 , further comprising at least one locking device associated with the assembly and configured to engage the hinge member arm in either the first position or the second position.

8. The cover assembly of claim 7 , wherein the cover assembly further comprises at least a second hinge member arm and the at least one locking device comprises at least four locking devices.

9. The cover assembly of claim 8 , wherein the hinge member arm is pivotally coupled to the base and the second hinge member arm is pivotally coupled to the lid.

10. The cover assembly of claim 7 , wherein the at least one locking device comprises first and second locking devices, wherein the first locking device is located along a first side of the assembly and the second locking device is located along the second side of the assembly.

11. The cover assembly of claim 1 , wherein the cover assembly is a rectangular single gang outlet cover assembly having first and third sides substantially parallel to each other and shorter than second and fourth sides which are substantially parallel to each other.

12. An electrical outlet cover assembly selectively configurable for horizontal and vertical mounting orientations, the cover assembly comprising:

a base;

a lid;

a hinge member arm pivotally coupled to the lid and being pivotable between a first position and a second position, the hinge member arm having at least one arm hinge member thereon;

first and second first base hinge members respectively coupled to the base on adjacent first and second base sides, wherein the first base hinge member is positioned to couple with the arm hinge member in the first position and the second base hinge member is positioned to couple with the arm hinge member in the second position;

wherein when the hinge member arm is in the first position and coupled to the first base hinge member, the lid is configured to pivot with respect to the base about a first axis, and when the hinge member arm is in the second position and coupled to the second base hinge member, the lid is configured to pivot with respect to the base about a second axis different from the first axis.

13. The cover assembly of claim 12 , wherein the first axis is substantially parallel to a first side of the assembly and the second axis is substantially parallel to a second side of the assembly substantially perpendicular to the first side.

14. The cover assembly of claim 12 , further comprising at least one locking device associated with the lid and configured to engage the hinge member arm in either the first position or the second position.

15. The cover assembly of claim 14 , wherein the at least one locking device comprises first and second locking devices, wherein the first locking device is located along a first side of the lid and the second locking device is located along the second side of the lid.

16. A method of assembling an electrical outlet cover assembly, the method comprising:

selecting an orientation for mounting the cover assembly from between horizontal and vertical orientations;

pivoting a hinge member arm coupled to the cover assembly from a first position to a second position if the hinge member arm is in an improper position for the selected orientation, wherein coupling of at least one hinge member on the hinge member arm with at least one other hinge member of the cover assembly forms a hinge configured to pivot about a first axis when in the first position and about a second axis different from the first axis when in the second position;

coupling a base of the cover assembly with a lid of the cover assembly by coupling the at least one hinge member on the hinge member arm with the at least one other hinge member of the cover assembly.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the hinge member arm is pivotally coupled to the assembly on the base, wherein the at least one other hinge member comprises first and second first lid hinge members respectively coupled to the lid on adjacent first and second lid sides, wherein the first lid hinge member is positioned to couple with the arm hinge member in the first position and the second lid hinge member is positioned to couple with the arm hinge member in the second position.
