Abstract

A patient monitor has multiple sensors adapted to attach to tissue sites of a living subject. The sensors generate sensor signals that are responsive to at least two wavelengths of optical radiation after attenuation by pulsatile blood within the tissue sites. A patient monitor uses the plurality of signals to reduce the effects of noise.

Claims (28)

1. A method of improving signal quality in a physiological measurement device, the method comprising:

obtaining a plurality of photoplethysmograph signals using a plurality of photoplethysmographic sensors operatively coupled to a physiological measurement device and indicative of at least one physiological condition, from a plurality of measurement sites of a patient, the measurement sites comprising first and second sites, the first site corresponding to one of the patient's ears, the patient's face, one of the patient's hands, one of the patient's feet, or one of the patient's limbs, the second site being a different body part than the first site and corresponding to one of the patient's ears, the patient's face, one of the patient's hands, one of the patient's feet, or one of the patient's limbs;

choosing, using one or more processors of the physiological measurement device, at least one signal of the plurality of signals based on a plurality of signal quality inputs, wherein each one of said plurality of signals has a corresponding signal quality input; and

calculating one or more physiological measurements based on the at least one signal using the one or more processors.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of obtaining a plurality of signals indicative of at least one physiological condition further comprises obtaining the plurality of signals from the same type of sensor.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein obtaining the plurality of signals from the same type of sensor comprises obtaining the plurality of signals from a plurality of oxygen saturation sensors.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein signal quality input is determined based on motion induced noise content.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein a first of the plurality of measurement sites comprises a right hand of the patient and a second of the plurality of measurement sites comprises a left hand of the patient.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein a first of the plurality of measurement sites comprises a hand of the patient and a second of the plurality of measurement sites comprises a foot of the patient.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the choosing comprises choosing at least two signals of the plurality of signals when at least two of the plurality of signals have an acceptable signal quality input, and wherein the calculating comprises calculating a first physiological measurement based on a first signal of the at least two signals and calculating a second physiological measurement based on a second signal of the at least two signals.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising comparing the first signal of the at least two signals with the second signal of the at least two signals and determining a patient abnormality based on the comparison.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the patient abnormality comprises a heart abnormality.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the heart abnormality comprises a congenital heart defect.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more physiological measurements comprise oxygen saturation or plethysmograph features.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising ignoring data from at least a noisy one of the plurality of signals during a particular time period, as indicated by the signal quality input.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising combining at least two of the plurality of signals during a particular time period, as indicated by the signal quality inputs.

14. A physiological measurement system for improving the signal quality of at least one signal indicative of a physiological condition, the system comprising:

a plurality of photoplethysmographic sensors;

a plurality of inputs configured to accept photoplethysmograph signals from the plurality of photoplethysmographic sensors located at a plurality of measurement sites of a patient; and

at least one processor configured to choose at least one signal of the plurality of signals based on a plurality of signal quality inputs, wherein each one of said plurality of signals has a corresponding signal quality input, and configured to calculate one or more physiological measurements based on the at least one signal.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of photoplethysmographic sensors comprise oxygen saturation sensors, and the photoplethysmograph signals are indicative of oxygen saturation at corresponding measurement sites.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the processor is configured to choose at least two signals of the plurality of signals when at least two of the plurality of signals have an acceptable signal quality input, and to calculate a first physiological measurement based on a first signal of the at least two signals, and to calculate a second physiological measurement based on a second signal of the at least two signals.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the processor is configured to compare the first signal with the second signal and determine a patient abnormality based on the comparison.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the patient abnormality comprises a heart abnormality.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the heart abnormality comprises a congenital heart defect.

20. The system of claim 14 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to ignore data from at least a noisy one of the plurality of signals during a particular time period, as indicated by the signal quality input.

21. The system of claim 14 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to combine at least two of the plurality of signals during a particular time period, as indicated by the signal quality inputs.

22. The system of claim 14 , wherein the one or more physiological measurements comprise oxygen saturation or plethysmograph features.
