Abstract

A flexible membrane is situated within a rigid or semi-rigid cap. The edge of the cap wall is adhesively fixed to the tissue surrounding the stoma. The interior of the cap is pressurized to press the membrane to seal the stoma against the discharge of solid and semi-solid waste. Gas escapes through a vent with a filter element. The cap can be pressurized by an external pump or an integral pump member situated on top of the cap. A relief valve prevents over pressurization. A collection pouch can be provided as part of a device. The device can be removably mounted on a standard two-piece faceplate.

Claims (11)

1. An ostomy device for sealing a stoma surgically formed in the abdominal wall created as a result of a colostomy, ileostomy or a urostomy so as to control the discharge of waste through the stoma, said device being situated entirely externally to the body and comprising flexible means, a rigid or semi-ridged member having an interior surface and an edge portion, and adhesive means for securing said edge portion of said member to the skin surrounding the stoma with said flexible means aligned and in direct contact with said stoma, said flexible means being fixed to said interior surface of said member to define a pressurizable chamber within said member, said flexible means being pressed against the stoma when said chamber is pressurized to prevent the passage of waste through the stoma.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein said flexible means and said member define a second chamber within said member.

3. The device of claim 2 further comprising means for venting said second chamber.

4. The device of claim 1 further comprising a fluid entrance port in said member connected to said pressurizable chamber.

5. The device of claim 4 further comprising means for pressurizing said chamber through said fluid entrance port.

6. The device of claim 5 wherein said pressurizing means comprises an external chamber connectible to said fluid entrance port the volume of which can be reduced by the application of pressure.

7. The device of claim 6 further comprising means for limiting the pressure in said pressurizable chamber.

8. The device of claim 7 wherein said pressure limiting means comprises a pressure relief valve.

9. The device of claim 1 further comprising waste collection means connected between said member and said adhering means.

10. The device of claim 9 wherein said waste collection means comprises a collection pouch.

11. The device of claim 9 wherein said waste collection means is collapsible.
