Abstract

The handcuff assembly includes a bow pivotally connected to a cheek plate frame assembly which includes a unitized frame that is die stamped from a metal plate and which is overmolded with a polymer overmold. The bow and arcuate cheek arms engage a wrist of a person to be restrained with an envelope of the bow being defined by a conic path with an increasing arc. The bow and cheek arms have rounded inner edge surfaces. The cheek arms have reinforcing ribs. The molded polymer covering surrounding the cheek arms provide a round on the inner edge of the cheek arms which engage a wrist. The unitized frame has interlocking tabs on folded side plates of a base frame. A flat is provided on an outer surface of the bow for lining up a point of contact with a wrist. A removable lockset assembly for locking a pawl relative to ratchet teeth on the bow and including a slideable lock bar is received in the base frame. A key receiving structure on each side of the lockset assembly is provided for receiving a key and enabling the key to turned in one direction only for first unlocking a double-lock, which prevents movement of the bow in either direction and for secondly, completely unlocking the handcuff by moving the pawl away from the bow and against a spring mechanism. A deflectable detent is provided on a lockset housing for releaseably locking the lockset assembly within the base frame of the molded cheek plate assembly. A swivel cup is fixed in the base frame of the cheek plate assembly prior to polymer overmolding and a swivel with a welded chain link mounted thereon and has a swivel pin which is received in the swivel cup.

Claims (26)

1. A handcuff assembly including a pair of handcuffs wherein each handcuff comprises:

a cheek plate frame assembly formed from a single, continuous, die stamped metal plate that is folded about a center line of the stamped metal plate so that opposing ends of the metal plate engage a bow of the handcuff at a pivot point on opposing sides of the bow and a center section of the stamped metal plate engages a link that connects the pair of handcuffs together; and

an overmold that is overmolded over the cheek plate frame assembly to provide curved, rounded or beveled edges to reduce risk of injury to prisoners.

2. The handcuff assembly as in claim 1 wherein the plastic overmold further comprises a beveled lock slot.

3. The handcuff assembly as in claim 1 wherein the plastic overmold further comprises a beveled keyway.

4. The handcuff assembly as in claim 1 wherein the overmold further comprises a plastic.

5. The handcuff assembly as in claim 1 wherein the overmold further comprises a polymer.

6. The handcuff assembly as in claim 1 wherein the plastic overmold further comprises a color code to indicate a source of the handcuff.

7. The handcuff assembly as in claim 1 wherein the opposing ends of the stamped metal plate further comprise a pair of cheek plates.

8. The handcuff assembly as in claim 7 wherein the pair of cheek plates further comprise an inwardly extending reinforcing rib extending along opposing sides of each of the pair of cheek plates.

9. The handcuff assembly as in claim 7 wherein the center section of the stamped metal plate further comprises a base frame portion of the cheek plate frame assembly.

10. The handcuff assembly as in claim 9 wherein the stamped metal plate further comprises a pair of folds on opposing sides of the center line of the stamped metal plate to define a bottom plate of the base frame portion.

11. The handcuff assembly as in claim 10 further comprising a pair of side plates disposed between the bottom plate and respective cheek arms.

12. The handcuff assembly as in claim 11 further comprising the overmold covering the bottom plate, the pair of side plates and the pair of cheek arms.

13. A handcuff assembly including a pair of handcuffs wherein each handcuff comprises:

a cheek plate frame assembly formed from a die stamped metal plate that is folded about a center line of the die stamped metal plate so that a folded end of the cheek plate frame assembly engages a link that connects the pair of handcuffs and an opposing end of the cheek plate assembly engages a bow of the handcuff at a pivot point on opposing sides of the bow; and

an overmold that is overmolded over the cheek plate frame assembly to provide curved, rounded or beveled edges to reduce risk of injury to prisoners.

14. The handcuff assembly as in claim 13 wherein the plastic overmold further comprises a beveled lock slot.

15. The handcuff assembly as in claim 13 wherein the plastic overmold further comprises a beveled keyway.

16. The handcuff assembly as in claim 13 wherein the overmold further comprises a plastic.

17. The handcuff assembly as in claim 13 wherein the overmold further comprises a polymer.

18. The handcuff assembly as in claim 13 wherein the plastic overmold further comprises a color code to indicate a source of the handcuff.

19. A handcuff assembly including a pair of handcuffs wherein each handcuff comprises:

a cheek plate frame assembly formed from a die stamped metal plate that is folded to form a continuous structural member beginning on a first end with a first cheek plate that is connected to a bow of the handcuff on a first side of the bow, extending through a base frame portion that forms a connection between the pair of handcuffs and back to a second cheek plate that connects with the bow on a second side of the bow; and

an overmold that is overmolded over the cheek plate frame assembly to provide curved, rounded or beveled edges to reduce risk of injury to prisoners.

20. The handcuff assembly as in claim 19 wherein the overmold further comprises a polymer.
