Abstract

A client system ( 200, 220 ) receives a content item. The user can mark the received content item as being of interest. In response to said marking, tracking means ( 204, 224 ) automatically provide identifying data for the marked content item to a remote server system ( 250 ). The server receives a portion of the content item from a client system ( 200, 220 ), processes the received portion to obtain an identifier for the content item, obtains further information on the content item using the identifier, and transmits the further information back to the client system ( 200, 220 ). The tracking means ( 204, 224 ) subsequently receive further information on the content item from the remote server system ( 250 ). An identifier for the content item can be used in an e-commerce system ( 160 ), for example by putting it on a shopping list ( 161 ) or to obtain a list of related items.

Claims (47)

1. A method of obtaining information on audio content, the method comprising:

at a mobile telephone having a microphone:

capturing an audio signal using the microphone, the audio signal including a portion of the audio content;

marking the audio content as being of interest to a user;

storing an identifier for the marked audio content in a tracking buffer provided at the mobile telephone, the storing being in response to the marking of the audio content to automatically provide the identifier to a remote server system via a transfer device, the transfer device comprising a first relay for receiving the identifier and a second relay for providing the identifier to the remote server system;

communicating the identifier to the remote server system via the transfer device to identify the information on the audio content and to obtain a list of items related to the marked audio content;

receiving the information and the list of items related to the audio content from the remote server system at the mobile telephone; and

displaying the information and the list of items related to the audio content on the mobile telephone.

2. The method of claim 1 , comprising establishing a telephone link between the mobile telephone and a base station, the base station communicating the identifier to the remote server system, the remote server system configured to identify the audio content.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the audio signal is at least a portion of a song, the information comprising least one of a title or an artist corresponding to the song.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information comprises a title, an artist, a photo, concert information or lyrics.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information is received via at least one of a SMS communication, an Instant Message communication, or an e-mail communication.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the remote server system is an e-commerce system, the method comprising communicating the identifier via a network to the e-commerce system.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying a webpage; and

establishing a link to the webpage.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the marking comprises receiving a user input from a user interface provided at the mobile telephone that marks the audio content as being of interest to a user.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein a user input that marks the audio content is received from a touch screen.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the identifier comprises an identifier obtained from a watermark detected in the marked audio content.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising adding the identifier for the audio content to a list for future reference by a user.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the identifier comprises a hash value.

13. The method of claim 1 , comprising presenting the information to a user via a webpage.

14. The method of claim 1 , comprising displaying the information formatted using a Wireless Application Protocol.

15. A mobile telephone comprising:

a microphone to receive an audio signal including a portion of audio content to be identified;

a processor to mark the audio content as being of interest to a user;

a tracking buffer to store an identifier for the marked audio content in response to the marking of the audio content to automatically provide the identifier to a remote server system via a transfer device, the transfer device comprising a first relay for receiving the identifier and a second relay for providing the identifier to the remote server system;

a transmitter to communicate the identifier to the remote server system via the transfer device to identify information on the audio content and to obtain a list of items related to the marked audio content;

a receiver to receive the information and the list of items related to the audio content from the remote server system at the mobile telephone; and

a display to display the information and the list of items related to the audio content on the mobile telephone.

16. The mobile telephone of claim 15 , wherein the transmitter is to establish a telephone link between the mobile telephone and a base station, the base station being to communicate the identifier to the remote server system, the remote server system configured to identify the audio content.

17. The mobile telephone of claim 15 , wherein the audio signal is at least a portion of a song, the processor being configured to identify at least one of a title or an artist corresponding to the song.

18. The mobile telephone of claim 15 , wherein the information comprises a title, an artist, a photo, concert information or lyrics.

19. The mobile telephone of claim 15 , wherein the information is receivable via at least one of a SMS communication, an Instant Message communication, or an e-mail communication.

20. The mobile telephone of claim 15 , wherein the remote server system is an e-commerce system, the transmitter configured to communicate the identifier via a network to the e-commerce system.

21. The mobile telephone of claim 15 , wherein the processor is configured to:

identify a webpage; and

initiate a link to the webpage.

22. The mobile telephone of claim 15 , wherein the identifier includes a hash value.

23. The mobile telephone of claim 15 , further comprising an input module to receive a user input from a user interface that marks an audio content of being of interest to a user.

24. A mobile telephone comprising:

means for capturing an audio signal using a microphone of the mobile telephone, the audio signal including a portion of audio content;

means for marking the audio content as being of interest to a user;

means for storing the identifier in a tracking buffer provided at the mobile telephone, the storing being in response to the marking of the audio content to automatically provide the identifier to a remote server system via a transfer device, the transfer device comprising a first relay for receiving the identifier and a second relay for providing the identifier to the remote server system;

means for communicating the identifier to the remote server system via the transfer device to identify information on the audio content and to obtain a list of items related to the marked audio content;

means for receiving the information and the list of items related to the audio content from the remote server system at the mobile telephone; and

means for displaying the information and the list of items related to the audio content on the mobile telephone.
