Abstract

Disclosed is an adjustable occlusion device for use in a body lumen such as the left atrial appendage. The occlusion device is removably carried by a deployment catheter. The device may be enlarged or reduced to facilitate optimal placement or removal. Methods are also disclosed.

Claims (20)

1. A method for implanting a device in the left atrial appendage, comprising:

providing an implantable device having a proximal end and a distal end, a threaded core, and a threaded aperture at the proximal end, the implantable device having a collapsed configuration and an expanded configuration;

expanding the implantable device in the left atrial appendage to a first position; and

repositioning the implantable device in the left atrial appendage by at least partially collapsing the implantable device by rotating said threaded core in a first direction in said threaded aperture to cause the threaded core to advance distally relative to the threaded aperture; and

re-expanding the implantable device to a second position within the left atrial appendage by rotation of said threaded core in a second direction opposite the first direction.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implantable device is delivered to the left atrial appendage using a deployment catheter.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implantable device is moveable between its collapsed configuration and its expanded configuration by causing relative movement between proximal and distal ends of the device.

4. A method for implanting a device in an opening of a patient, the device having a proximal end, a distal end, and a threaded aperture at the proximal end for use with a threaded core, the method comprising:

delivering a sheath having a proximal end and a distal end to a location near the opening;

advancing an implantable device through the sheath to the location, the device being outwardly biased to an expanded configuration and being held in a collapsed configuration by the threaded core while being advanced through the sheath;

moving the implantable device out of the distal end of the sheath and into the opening, the implantable device remaining held in the collapsed configuration while positioned in the opening; and

expanding the implantable device at least partially in the opening by rotation of said threaded core such that the threaded core moves proximally.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the opening is an opening in the heart.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the opening is a left atrial appendage.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the device is collapsed by increasing the distance between the proximal and distal ends of the device.

8. The method of claim 4 , wherein the device is collapsed by engaging the threaded core against a distal surface of the device while rotating said threaded core connected to a proximal end of the device.

9. The method of claim 4 , wherein during the step of expanding the implantable device, the rotation of the threaded core expands the device by relieving stress on the device.

10. The method of claim 4 , further comprising re-collapsing the device while the device is in the opening.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising repositioning the device within the opening and re-expanding the device.

12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising proximally retracting the re-collapsed device within the sheath.
