Abstract

Compositions and methods for increasing grinding efficiency of cement, cement clinker, raw materials for cement, and other inorganic particles. Use of biomass-derived polyols such as diols, triols, or mixtures thereof, optionally with a conventional grinding aid, cement quality improver, and/or hexavalent chromium reducer, are believed to provide less risk of sludging when compared to glycerides obtained from fossil fuel sources.

Claims (22)

1. A method for increasing grinding efficiency of particles being ground to finer particle size, comprising:

introducing a grinding additive composition into a plurality of particles to be ground to finer particle size, said particles comprising cement particles, cement clinker particles, calcite particles, limestone particles, aragonite particles, sea shells particles, marl particles, limonite particles, clay particles, shale particles, sand particles, bauxite particles, blast furnace slag particles, or mixture of said particles;

said grinding additive composition being employed in an amount of 0.001% to 1.0% by weight based on weight of said plurality of particles to be ground, and said grinding additive composition comprising Component A and Component B wherein

(A) Component A comprises a diol, triol, or mixture thereof, said Component A being derived from a plant or animal biomass material and having an average molecular weight of 50-200, said biomass-derived Component A comprising:

(i) a glycerol derived from biofuel production, said glycerol being present in an amount of at least 50-95% based on weight of said grinding additive composition, and further comprising, where Component A comprises said glycerol, at least 0.005%-50% by weight based on weight of said grinding additive composition of a non-glycerin organic material derived from a plant or animal biomass material; or

(ii) a glycol derived from a carbohydrate or sugar; or

(iii) a mixture of (i) and (ii); and

said Component A further comprising a nonglycerol organic matter (hereinafter “MONG”) derived from said plant or animal biomass material, said MONG being present in an amount not exceeding 15% by weight of said grinding additive composition; and

(B) Component B comprising a cement additive selected from the group consisting of a glycol where Component A is a biomass-derived glycerol, triethanolamine, acetic acid or salt thereof, triisopropanolamine, sodium acetate, diethanol-isopropanolamine, tetrahydroxyethylethylene diamine, a carbohydrate, a polycarboxylate ether, an air entraining agent, a chloride, a nitrite, a nitrate, or a hexavalent chromium reducer; and

grinding said grinding additive composition and said plurality of particles together using a grinding mill selected from the group consisting of a rolling ball mill, a mill having rotating cylinders, or a circular table mill having rollers, whereby said plurality of particles are ground to a finer particle size.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said Component A comprises both a biomass-derived diol and biomass-derived triol.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein said Component A is derived from biofuel production.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein said Component A contains 1,2,3-propane triol in the amount of at least 80% by weight of said grinding additive composition.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein said Component A comprises a biomass-derived diol, triol, or mixture thereof modified by reacting said biomass-derived diol, triol, or mixture thereof with a monobasic carboxylic acid.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein said biomass-derived diol, triol, or mixture thereof has one or more substituted OH groups.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein said Component B is a hexavalent chromium reducer.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein said Component A is a glycol derived from tapioca, cane sugar, molasses, lactose, plant or vegetable fibers, animal manure, wastes from wheat, corn, potatoes, dairy products, or mixture thereof.

The method of claim 1 wherein said Component A is a biofuel production-derived glycerin in the amount of 10-80%; and said Component B is a triethanolamine, a triisopropanolamine, or mixture thereof, said triethanolamine, a triisopropanolamine, or mixture thereof being present in the amount of 10-80% based on total weight of composition.

10. The method of claim 9 further comprising introducing a hexavalent chromium reducer to said plurality of particles, said hexavalent chromium reducer, said Component A, and said Component B are added to said particles at the same time.

11. The method of claim 2 wherein said diols and triols are obtained from catalytically hydrogenated plant or vegetable fibers.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein said Component A and said Component B are used in a weight ratio of 90:10 to 10:90.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein said MONG is present in an amount not exceeding 10% based on weight of said grinding additive composition.
