Abstract

The present application describes an implant system useable for positioning an implant device such as a device useful for restricting passage of ingested food into the stomach. In one embodiment, the disclosed system includes a plurality of anchors that may be coupled to tissue within the stomach, or to a tissue tunnel formed by plicating stomach wall tissue. The anchor includes a loop. During use, the implant device is inserted through the loop and expanded such that it retains its position within the loop until removed. Instruments for implanting and explanting the implant device are also described.

Claims (8)

1. A method of securing a food-restrictor device near the gastroesophageal junction within the interior of the stomach in a subject, comprising the steps of:

forming a plurality of plications arrayed at spaced-apart positions about the gastroesophageal junction within the stomach and forming a tissue tunnel extending through each plication;

placing a plurality of staples around the tunnel to hold the plication together in the region of the tissue tunnel,

after forming said tissue tunnel and placing said staples around the tunnel, coupling to each plication, an anchor having a fastener with first and second ends, by extending the first fastener end through the tissue tunnel and engaging the first and second ends; and

securing the food-restrictor device within the stomach by attaching the food-restrictor device to each anchor.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the food-restrictive device is a pouch for restricting food intake into the stomach and said attaching results in a proximal opening of the pouch being aligned with the esophagus.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein forming a plurality of plications comprises forming three plications arrayed at spaced-apart positions.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein forming a plurality of plications comprises forming four plications arrayed at spaced-apart positions.
