Abstract

An electrochemical cell is provided with an enhanced pressure relief vent formed in a closed end of the cell container that allows for effective venting of gas from the closed end of the container. The cell includes a container having a first end, a second end, a side wall extending between the first and second ends, and an end wall extending across the first end. The cell has a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and an aqueous alkaline electrolyte, all disposed in the container. The cell further includes a pressure relief vent mechanism having a reduced thickness groove formed in the end wall of the container. A cover is welded to the closed end wall of the container over the pressure relief vent mechanism and is welded via at least three welds, wherein two adjacent welds are angularly separated by more than 120°.

Claims (39)

1. An electrochemical cell comprising:

a container having a first end, a second end, a side wall extending between the first and second ends, and an end wall extending across the first end;

a positive electrode disposed in said container;

a negative electrode disposed in said container;

an aqueous alkaline electrolyte disposed in said container;

a pressure relief vent mechanism formed in said container for releasing internal pressure from within said container when the internal pressure becomes excessive; and

a cover welded onto the end wall of the container and extending over said pressure relief vent mechanism, said cover including a peripheral flange welded via at least three welds to said end wall of said container, wherein said at least three welds are positioned such that an angle between two adjacent welds is greater than 120°.

2. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 1 , wherein said angle between two adjacent welds is in the range of 160° to 180°.

3. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 1 , wherein said angle between two adjacent welds is between 120° and 240°.

4. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 1 , wherein said welds consists of three welds.

5. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 1 , wherein said container comprises a steel can.

6. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 1 , wherein said pressure relief vent mechanism comprises a reduced thickness groove formed in the end wall of said container.

7. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 1 , wherein said cover further comprises a protruding nubbin having a contact surface and an upstanding wall between the contact surface and the peripheral flange.

8. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 7 , wherein said cover comprises a positive contact terminal.

9. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 1 , wherein said positive electrode comprises manganese dioxide and said negative electrode comprises zinc.

10. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 1 , wherein said container is substantially cylindrical.

11. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 1 , wherein the end wall of said container is an integral end wall.

12. A metal can having a pressure relief vent mechanism and a welded cover for use as an electrochemical cell container, said can comprising:

a side wall;

an open end;

a closed end wall;

a pressure relief vent mechanism formed in the closed end wall; and

a cover welded to the closed end wall over the pressure relief vent mechanism, said cover being welded via at least three welds, wherein two adjacent welds are angularly separated by more than 120°.

13. The metal can as defined in claim 12 , wherein said angle between two adjacent welds is in the range of 160° to 180°.

14. The metal can as defined in claim 12 , wherein said angle between two adjacent welds is between 120° and 240°.

15. The metal can as defined in claim 12 , wherein said welds consists of three welds.

16. The metal can as defined in claim 12 , wherein said container comprises a steel can.

17. The metal can as defined in claim 12 , wherein said pressure relief vent mechanism comprises a reduced thickness groove formed in the end wall of said container.

18. The metal can as defined in claim 12 , wherein said cover further comprises a protruding nubbin having a contact surface and an upstanding wall between the contact surface and the peripheral flange.

19. The metal can as defined in claim 18 , wherein said cover comprises a positive contact terminal.

20. The metal can as defined in claim 12 , wherein said container is substantially cylindrical.

21. The metal can as defined in claim 12 , wherein the end wall of said container is an integral end wall.

22. An electrochemical cell comprising:

a container having a first end, a second end, a side wall extending between the first and second ends, and an end wall extending across the first end;

a positive electrode disposed in said container;

a negative electrode disposed in said container;

a pressure relief vent mechanism formed in said end wall of said container for releasing internal pressure from within said container when the internal pressure becomes excessive; and

a cover welded onto the end wall of the container and extending over said pressure relief vent mechanism, said cover including a peripheral flange welded via exactly two welds to said end wall of said container, wherein the welds have two angles therebetween that are not 180°.

23. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 22 , wherein the end wall of said container is an intergral end wall.
