Abstract

A digital radiography detector includes a housing having first and second spaced planar members and four side walls defining a cavity. A radiographic image detector assembly is mounted within the cavity for converting a radiographic image to an electronic radiographic image. The detector assembly includes a detector array mounted on a stiffener. A shock absorbing elastomer assembly is located within the cavity for absorbing shock to the detector array/stiffener in directions perpendicular to and parallel to the detector array/stiffener.

Claims (30)

1. A digital radiography detector comprising:

a housing having first and second spaced planar members and four side walls defining a cavity;

a stiffener disposed in the cavity;

a radiographic image detector mounted on the stiffener within the cavity for converting a radiographic image to an electronic radiographic image, the detector comprising a detector array formed on a substrate; and

a shock absorbing assembly comprising an elastomeric material and located within the cavity for absorbing shock to the detector array/stiffener in directions perpendicular to and parallel to the detector array/stiffener.

2. The digital radiography detector of claim 1 wherein the shock absorbing assembly includes a plurality of elastomeric members, located at a plurality of corners of the detector array/stiffener.

3. The detector digital radiography of claim 2 wherein the plurality of elastomeric members encapsulate the corners of the detector array/stiffener.

4. The digital radiography detector of claim 1 wherein the shock absorbing assembly includes at least one elastomeric member extending the length of a side wall of the housing.

5. The digital radiography detector of claim 1 wherein the shock absorbing assembly includes a plurality of elastomeric members extending the lengths of two or more of the side walls.

6. The digital radiography detector of claim 1 wherein the radiographic image detector further comprises a scintillator screen disposed on a side of the detector array closest an exposing X-ray source for converting a radiographic image into a radiographic light image which is converted by the detector array into the electronic radiographic image; and

the digital radiography detector further comprising a pressure member located between the first planar member of the housing and the scintillator screen urging the scintillator screen and the detector array into close physical contact.

7. The digital radiography detector of claim 6 wherein the pressure member is a compliant foam member.

8. The digital radiography detector of claim 6 wherein the pressure member is one or more springs.

9. The digital radiography detector of claim 1 wherein the radiographic image detector includes a scintillator screen disposed on a side of the detector closest an exposing X-ray source for converting a radiographic image into a radiographic light image which is converted by the detector array into the electronic radiographic image; and wherein the scintillator screen is bonded to the detector array.

10. The digital radiography detector of claim 1 wherein the radiographic image detector includes a scintillator screen disposed on a side of the detector closest an exposing X-ray source for converting a radiographic image into a radiographic light image which is converted by the detector array into the electronic radiographic image; and including pressure members located on opposite sides of the screen scintillator and detector array/stiffener for urging the screen and the detector array into close physical contact.

11. The digital radiography detector of claim 10 wherein the pressure members are compliant foam members.

12. The digital radiography detector of claim 1 further comprising a battery and imaging electronics mounted within the cavity below the detector array/stiffener; and

a thermal transfer member thermally coupled to the battery and imaging electronics for dispersing heat generated by the battery and the imaging electronics.

13. The digital radiography detector of claim 12 wherein the thermal transfer member is thermally coupled to the second planar member of the housing to disperse the heat externally of the detector.

14. The digital radiography detector of claim 1 further comprising a wireless interface having an antenna for wirelessly transmitting an electronic radiographic image from the detector to a remote location.

15. The digital radiography detector of claim 14 wherein the antenna is mounted on the outside of the housing.

16. The digital radiography detector of claim 15 wherein the antenna is wrapped around the outside of the housing and covered with a material that does not attenuate the wireless signal.

17. The digital radiography detector of claim 1 wherein the housing comprises an upper housing and a lower housing secured together, wherein the upper housing includes the first planar member and part of the four side walls, and the lower housing includes the second planar member and the rest of the four sidewalls.

18. The digital radiography detector of claim 1 wherein the housing includes an external frame including the four side walls, and wherein the first and second planar members are mounted to the external frame.

19. The digital radiography detector of claim 1 wherein at least one of the first and second planar members is made from a lightweight composite material.

20. The digital radiography detector of claim 19 wherein the lightweight composite material comprises a polymeric core sandwiched between thin aluminum skins.

21. The digital radiographv detector of claim 19 wherein the lightweight composite material comprises a carbon fiber based composite material.

22. The digital radiography detector of claim 1 further comprising an elastomer coating on at least a portion of the external surface of the housing to provide protection against shock and damage to the detector housing and internal components.

23. The digital radiography detector of claim 1 further comprising a temperature sensor mounted within the housing for monitoring the temperature of the detector array.

24. The digital radiography detector of claim 1 , wherein the radiographic image detector is adhered to the stiffener.
