Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention include systems and methods that relate to a sensor with memory. Specifically, one embodiment includes a sensor, comprising a light emitting element configured to emit light, a light detecting element configured to detect the light, and a memory storing data corresponding to algorithms used by an oximeter monitor, the memory providing access to the oximeter monitor to read the data.

Claims (32)

1. An oximeter sensor, comprising:

a light emitting element configured to emit light;

a light detecting element configured to detect the light; and

a memory storing data comprising updated algorithms for use by an oximeter monitor to update functionality of the oximeter monitor, the memory providing access to the oximeter monitor to read the data.

2. The oximeter sensor of claim 1 , wherein the data comprises executable software code configured to upgrade software on the monitor that employs the algorithms.

3. The oximeter sensor of claim 1 , wherein the data is digitally encoded.

4. A method of manufacturing an oximeter sensor, comprising:

providing an access point configured to facilitate communication with an oximeter monitor;

providing a light emitting element configured to emit light;

providing a light detecting element configured to detect the light; and

providing data in a memory of the sensor, the data comprising updated algorithms for use by the oximeter monitor to update functionality of the oximeter monitor.

5. A method of operation of an oximeter sensor, comprising:

emitting a light into a patient with a light emitting element;

detecting the light with a detecting element; and

providing data in a memory of the sensor to an oximeter monitor, the data comprising updated algorithms for use by the oximeter monitor to update functionality of the oximeter monitor.

6. An oximeter system, comprising:

an oximeter sensor, comprising:

a light emitting element configured to project light into a patient;

a light detector configured to detect the light; and

a memory storing data comprising updated algorithms for interpreting detected light; and

an oximeter monitor, comprising:

an output circuit configured to provide signals to the oximeter sensor; and

a read circuit configured to read the data comprising updated algorithms from the memory of the oximeter sensor.

7. An oximeter monitor, comprising:

a drive circuit configured to provide signals to circuitry of an oximeter sensor that is coupleable to a patient;

a circuit configured to receive data from a memory of the oximeter sensor, the data comprising updated algorithms for interpreting detected light; and

a processor configured to interpret light detected by the oximeter sensor using the data.

8. A method of oximeter monitor operation, comprising:

providing signals to circuitry of an oximeter sensor that is coupleable to a patient;

receiving signals corresponding to light detected by the oximeter sensor;

receiving data from a memory of the oximeter sensor, the data comprising updated algorithms for interpreting the signals; and

interpreting the signals using the updated algorithms.
