Abstract

A portable ventilator uses a ROOTS-type blower as a compressor to reduce both the size and power consumption of the ventilator. Various functional aspects of the ventilator are delegated to multiple subassemblies having dedicated controllers and software that interact with a ventilator processor to provide user interface functions, exhalation control and flow control servos, and monitoring of patient status. The ventilator overcomes noise problems through the use of noise reducing pressure compensating orifices on the ROOTS-type blower housing and multiple baffling chambers. The ventilator is configured with a highly portable form factor, and may be used as a stand-alone device or as a docked device having a docking cradle with enhanced interface and monitoring capabilities.

Claims (31)

1. A portable ventilator comprising:

a blower for providing gas flow to a patient, the blower comprising an analog sensor, the analog sensor providing continuous rotor position and speed feedback for closed loop control and a signal, to an analog-to-digital conversion circuit, said feedback for generating a self test for determining performance of the blower;

a noise attenuation system for reducing noise generated by the blower, said noise attenuation system comprising a microphone to receive noise input and a speaker for generating noise output, wherein said noise output cancels a portion of said noise input;

a battery bay configured to retain a removable and rechargeable battery, said rechargeable battery configured to provide power to said blower, to said noise attenuation system, said analog sensor, said analog-to-digital conversion circuit and said speaker; and

a docking cradle interface comprising a base, said base providing an electrical interconnection with the portable ventilator, said docking cradle interface also configured to re-charge said removable and rechargeable battery.

2. The portable ventilator of claim 1 , wherein the noise attenuation system comprises at least one noise reduction chamber.

3. The portable ventilator of claim 2 , further comprising at least one perforated tube disposed in the at least one noise reducing chamber.

4. The portable ventilator of claim 3 , wherein the perforated tube includes a plurality of tubelets protruding outwardly therefrom in a manner to creating a muffling pathway for attenuating sound waves.

5. The portable ventilator of claim 1 , wherein:

the blower includes a housing having an inlet port and an outlet port; and

the noise attenuation system comprising at least one noise reducing groove disposed in at least one of the inlet and outlet ports.

6. The portable ventilator of claim 1 , wherein the noise attenuation system comprises active sound canceling of noise generated by the blower.

7. The portable ventilator of claim 6 , further comprising at least one microphone and at least one speaker, wherein:

the microphone is configured to monitor audible noise of the blower and generate a signal representative thereof, and

the speaker is configured to generate anti-noise output in response to the signal to at least partially cancel the blower noise.

8. The portable ventilator of claim 1 , further comprising a housing having a plurality of integrally formed noise reducing chambers.

9. The portable ventilator of claim 8 , further comprising a rubber boot co-molded with the housing.

10. The portable ventilator of claim 8 , further comprising a collapsible handle attached to the housing.

11. The portable ventilator of claim 1 , comprising a multiple-processor ventilator control system having a ventilator processor.

12. The portable ventilator of claim 11 , wherein:

the multiple-processor ventilator control system further comprises at least one of a blower processor, an exhalation processor, a blender processor, and a pressure processor;

each processor is operable to communicate with the ventilator processor;

the blower processor is operative to control operation of the blower;

the exhalation processor is operative to control actuation of an exhalation control valve;

the blender processor is operative to regulate oxygen concentration in gas delivered to the patient; and

the pressure processor is operative to monitor at least one pressure transducer disposed within the portable ventilator.

13. The portable ventilator of claim 12 , further comprising:

an electric motor adapted to drive the blower,

wherein the blower processor is operative to provide control signals to the electric motor based on at least one of characterization data for the electric motor and a measured gas flow generated by the blower.

14. The portable ventilator according to claim 1 , wherein said docking cradle further comprises a cradle arm.

15. The portable ventilator according to claim 14 , further comprising a monitor connected to said arm.
