Abstract

A system and method are described for performing motion capture on stop-motion animated characters. For example, a method according to one embodiment of the invention comprises: embedding phosphor within a moldable material; forming one or more stop-motion objects from the moldable material to create a first phosphor pattern; exposing the moldable material to a light source; removing the light source; and capturing the first phosphor pattern with a first set of one or more cameras.

Claims (44)

1. A method for performing stop-motion animation capture comprising:

(a) embedding phosphor within or on a surface of a moldable material;

(b) forming a stop-motion object from the moldable material to create a first orientation of the stop motion object, the first orientation having a first phosphor pattern;

(c) exposing the stop-motion object to a light source;

(d) turning the light source off;

(e) capturing an image of the first phosphor pattern with a plurality of cameras (“dark image”);

(f) turning the light source on;

(g) capturing an image of the stop-motion object in the first orientation with the light source on with a plurality of cameras (“lit image”);

(h) adjusting the moldable material to create a new orientation of the stop motion object, the new orientation having a new phosphor pattern;

(i) turning the light source off;

(j) capturing a dark image of the new phosphor pattern with a plurality of cameras;

(k) turning the light source on;

(l) capturing a lit image of the stop-motion object in the new orientation with the light source on with a plurality of cameras; and

(m) continuing to perform steps (h) through (l) until the stop-motion animation capture is complete, resulting in a sequence of dark images and corresponding lit images;

(n) processing the sequence of dark images with a data processing system to generate data representing a three-dimensional surface of the stop-motion object: and

(o) processing the sequence of lit images with the data processing system to mare textured surfaces from the lit images onto the three-dimensional surfaces collected from the corresponding sequence of dark images, resulting in textured, three-dimensional surfaces available for playback.

2. The method as in claim 1 wherein the plurality of cameras used to capture the lit images are different from the plurality of cameras used to capture the dark images.

3. The method as in claim 2 wherein the plurality of cameras used to capture the lit images are configured to capture color images and the plurality of cameras used to capture the dark images are configured to capture grayscale images.

4. The method as in claim 1 wherein the stop-motion objects is a character in a motion picture or video production.

5. The method as in claim 1 wherein the moldable material is modeling clay and wherein the phosphor is embedded within the modeling clay by mixing phosphor powder into the modeling clay.

6. The method as in claim 1 wherein the moldable material is liquid silicone and wherein the phosphor is embedded within the liquid silicone by mixing phosphor powder into the liquid silicone.

7. The method as in claim 1 further comprising:

choosing a camera position for playback; and

rendering the textured, three-dimensional surfaces from the chosen camera position during playback.

8. The method as in claim 1 further comprising:

separately performing steps (a) through (in) for a second stop-motion object; and

processing the sequence of dark images for the second stop-motion object with the data processing system to generate data representing a three-dimensional surface of the second stop-motion object; and

processing the sequence of lit images for the second stop-motion object with the data processing system to map textured surfaces from the lit images onto the three-dimensional surfaces collected from the corresponding sequence of dark images, resulting in textured, three-dimensional surfaces available for playback.

9. A method for performing stop-motion animation capture comprising:

(a) embedding phosphor within or on a surface of a moldable material;

(b) forming a stop-motion object from the moldable material to create a first orientation of the stop motion object, the first orientation having a first phosphor pattern;

(c) exposing the stop-motion object to a light source;

(d) turning the light source off;

(e) capturing an image of the first phosphor pattern with a plurality of cameras (“dark image”);

(f) turning the light source on;

(g) capturing an image of the stop-motion object in the first orientation with the light source on with a plurality of cameras (“lit image”);

(h) adjusting the moldable material to create a new orientation of the stop motion object, the new orientation having a new phosphor pattern;

(i) turning the light source off;

(j) capturing a dark image of the new phosphor pattern with a plurality of cameras;

(k) turning the light source on;

(l) capturing a lit image of the stop-motion object in the new orientation with the light source on with a plurality of cameras; and

(m) continuing to perform steps (h) through (l) until the stop-motion animation capture is complete, resulting in a sequence of dark images and corresponding lit images;

wherein the plurality of cameras used to capture the lit images are different from the plurality of cameras used to capture the dark images; and

wherein the plurality of cameras used to capture the lit images are configured to capture color images and the plurality of cameras used to capture the dark images are configured to capture grayscale images.
