Abstract

A method and apparatus for measuring relative humidity of a mixture that provides a quick response time for thermal lag while affording protection to fragile sensors. In one aspect, the invention is a method for calculating the relative humidity of a mixture comprising measuring a chamber relative humidity (RHC) within a chamber enclosing an humidity sensor; measuring a first temperature (TC) within the chamber; measuring a second temperature (TA) separate from said chamber, said second temperature being the temperature of the mixture; and calculating the mixture relative humidity (RHA) based on the chamber relative humidity, a first value representing the first temperature and a second value representing the second temperature.

Claims (40)

1. A method for calculating the relative humidity of a mixture comprising:

measuring a chamber relative humidity (RH C ) within a chamber enclosing an humidity sensor;

measuring a first temperature (T C ) within the chamber;

measuring a second temperature (T A ) separate from said chamber, said second temperature being the temperature of the mixture; and

calculating the mixture relative humidity (RH A ) based on the chamber relative humidity, a first value representing the first temperature and a second value representing the second temperature.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mixture is ambient air.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of transmitting each of the first temperature, second temperature and chamber relative humidity to a processor, said processor thereby calculating the mixture relative humidity.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein said first value is a known saturation vapor pressure (ew C ) for the first temperature T C , and said second value is a known saturation vapor (ew A ) for the second temperature T A .

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the calculating step is in accordance with the formula RH A =RH C [ew C /ew A ].

6. An apparatus for obtaining measurements of a mixture comprising:

a chamber having a chamber volume and an opening;

a humidity sensor in the chamber volume for producing a first signal relating to relative humidity within the chamber volume;

a first temperature sensor for producing a second signal relating to the temperature within the chamber volume (T C );

a second temperature sensor for producing a third signal relating to the temperature of the mixture at a point exterior to the chamber (T A ); and

a processor, coupled to the humidity sensor, the first temperature sensor, and the second temperature sensor, for receiving the first, second, and third signals, and calculating a relative humidity of the mixture from said first signal, a first value representing the second signal and a second value representing the third signal.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein internal surfaces of the chamber are constructed of a nonabsorbent material.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the first temperature sensor is located within the chamber volume.

9. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the humidity sensor and the first temperature sensor are combined on a single substrate located within the chamber volume.

10. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the chamber volume is approximately 0.5 to approximately 2.0 ml.

11. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein said first value is a known saturation vapor pressure (ew C ) for the second signal, and said second value is a known saturation vapor (ew A ) for the third signal.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the processor calculate the relative humidity of the mixture in accordance with the formula RH A =RH C [ew C /ew A ].

13. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the first temperature sensor and the second temperature sensor are thermistors.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein the thermistors are matched.

15. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the chamber is cylindrically shaped having a first end and a second end, the membrane forming the first end of the chamber and a portion of a circuit board forming the second end of the chamber.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein the portion of the circuit board that forms the second end of the chamber is coated with or constructed of a nonabsorbent material.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 wherein the nonabsorbent material is selected from the group consisting of brass, gold, tin, bronze, silver, platinum, and lead.

18. The apparatus of claim 6 further comprising a membrane, permeable to water vapor while impermeable to liquid water, covering the opening of the chamber.

19. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein the chamber is entirely constructed of the nonabsorbent material or the internal surfaces are a coating of nonabsorbent material.

20. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein the nonabsorbent material is a metal.

21. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein the nonabsorbent material is selected from the group consisting of brass, gold, tin, bronze, silver, platinum, and lead.

22. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein the membrane is constructed of microporous hydrophobic polymeric material.

23. The apparatus of claim 18 further comprising a housing having an internal volume and a hole; the chamber mounted in the internal volume of the housing so that the membrane is aligned with the hole; the second temperature sensor being located exterior to the internal volume of the housing; the first temperature sensor being located exterior to the chamber but within the internal volume of the housing; an O-ring positioned between the membrane and the housing so as to form a sealed fit between the membrane and the housing; the second temperature sensor located in a passageway extending through the housing; wherein the first temperature sensor and the second temperature sensor are matched thermistors; wherein the chamber volume is in the range from approximately 0.5 to approximately 2.0 ml; and wherein the chamber is constructed of a metal.

24. The apparatus of claim 18 further comprising:

a housing having an internal volume and a breather hole;

wherein the chamber is mounted in the internal volume of the housing so that the membrane is aligned with and in fluid communication with the breather hole; and

the second temperature sensor being located exterior to the internal volume of the housing.

25. The apparatus of claim 24 wherein the first temperature sensor is located exterior to the chamber but within the internal volume of the housing.

26. The apparatus of claim 15 further comprising an O-ring positioned between the membrane and the housing so as to form a sealed fit between the membrane and the housing.

27. The apparatus of claim 24 wherein the second temperature sensor is located in a passageway extending through the housing.

28. The apparatus of claim 24 wherein the housing is adapted to be a hand held meter.
