Abstract

Bone cages are disclosed including devices for biocompatible implantation. The structures of bone are useful for providing living cells and tissues as well as biologically active molecules to subjects.

Claims (28)

1. A device comprising:

a bone cage at least partially forming an internal cavity,

a semi-permeable component including a tissue coating comprising choroid plexus epithelial cells cultured on and supported by a scaffold, the semi-permeable component at least partially enclosing the bone cage, the semi-permeable component having one or more characteristics of a choroid plexus epithelium, and

wherein at least one characteristic of the one or more characteristics of the choroid plexus epithelium is different from the characteristic in peripheral epithelium.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one characteristic of the one or more characteristics of the choroid plexus epithelium that is different from the characteristic in the peripheral epithelium includes one or more of interepithelial tight junctions, interepithelial electrical resistance, apical microvilli, basolateral interdigitations, mitochondria, transport systems, or polarity between apical and basal surfaces.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the interepithelial electrical resistance in the semi-permeable component is increased in value compared with the interepithelial electrical resistance in the peripheral epithelium.

4. The device of claim 2 , wherein the apical microvilli of epithelial cells in the semi-permeable component are increased compared with microvilli in the peripheral epithelium.

5. The device of claim 2 , wherein the basolateral interdigitations of the epithelial cells in the semi-permeable component are increased compared with interdigitations in the peripheral epithelium.

6. The device of claim 2 , wherein the mitochondria in cytoplasm of the semi-permeable component are increased compared with the mitochondria in the peripheral epithelium.

7. The device of claim 2 , wherein one or more of the transport systems of epithelial cells of the semi-permeable component are at elevated concentrations compared with the transport systems in the peripheral epithelium.

8. The device of claim 2 , wherein one or more of the transport systems of epithelial cells of the semi-permeable component are differentially localized compared with the transport systems in the peripheral epithelium.

9. The device of claim 2 , wherein the one or more characteristics of the choroid plexus epithelium is polarity between the apical and basal surfaces of the choroid plexus epithelium.

10. The device of claim 9 , wherein the basal surface of the choroid plexus epithelium is oriented toward the internal cavity.

11. The device of claim 9 , wherein the apical surface of the choroid plexus epithelium is oriented toward the internal cavity.

12. The device of claim 1 , for implantation in a subject, wherein the semi-permeable component is autologous, allogeneic or xenogeneic with respect to the subject.

13. The device of claim 12 , wherein the subject is selected from the group consisting of a domesticated animal, a farm animal, a marine animal, a sport animal, a wild animal, a research animal, a zoo animal, a bird, an amphibian, a reptile, a fish and a mammal.

14. The device of claim 1 , wherein the semi-permeable component is genetically engineered.

15. The device of claim 1 , wherein the semi-permeable component is designed to at least partially prevent bone restructuring.

16. The device of claim 1 , wherein the semi-permeable component is designed to at least partially enhance restructuring.

17. The device of claim 1 , for implantation in a subject, wherein the semi-permeable component is non-immunogenic with respect to the subject.

18. The device of claim 1 , for implantation in a subject, wherein the semi-permeable component is recognized as self by the subject.

19. The device of claim 1 , wherein the device is implantable.

20. The device of claim 1 , further comprising one or more living cells or tissues.

21. The device of claim 20 , wherein the one or more living cells or tissues are at least partially located in the internal cavity.

22. The device of claim 20 , for implantation in a subject, wherein the one or more living cells or tissues are autologous, allogeneic or xenogeneic with respect to the subject.

23. The device of claim 20 , for implantation in a subject, wherein the one or more living cells or tissues deliver one or more biologically active molecules to the subject.

24. The device of claim 1 , further comprising one or more biologically active molecules.

25. The device of claim 24 , wherein the one or more biologically active molecules are at least partially located in the internal cavity.
