Abstract

A display device includes a substrate having display portion and peripheral portion, a plurality of gate signal lines and a plurality of drain signal lines formed over the substrate, a plurality of switching elements connected to the plurality of gate signal lines and the plurality of drain signal lines and formed over the substrate, and a plurality of pixel electrodes connected to the plurality of switching elements and formed in the display portion. An organic interlayer film is formed in the display portion and the peripheral portion, and a covering layer is formed on the organic interlayer film in the peripheral portion and the insulating film includes at least one of a plurality of recesses and protuberances.

Claims (25)

1. A display device comprising:

a substrate having a display portion and a peripheral portion;

a plurality of gate signal lines and a plurality of drain signal lines formed over the substrate;

a plurality of pixel regions formed in the display portion surrounded by at least two gate signal lines and at least two drain signal lines;

a plurality of switching elements for the plurality of pixel regions connected to the plurality of gate signal lines and the plurality of drain signal lines and formed in the display portion;

a plurality of pixel electrodes connected to the plurality of switching elements and formed in the display portion;

an inorganic insulation film formed on the substrate so as to extend in the display portion and the peripheral portion of the substrate toward an end of the substrate; and

an organic interlayer film formed on the inorganic insulation film so as to extend in the display portion and a part of the peripheral portion of the substrate so that the organic interlayer film extends over an area smaller than an area of the inorganic insulation film, the organic interlayer film having an outer end on the inorganic insulation film including a top surface and a side surface delimiting a step region adjacent to the end of the substrate, the outer end of the organic interlayer film being formed on the peripheral portion of the substrate and outside of the display portion of the substrate;

wherein a covering layer is formed on at least a portion of the outer end of the organic interlayer film including the top surface and the side surface of the step region thereof at the outer end of the organic interlayer film, the covering layer being formed without being electrically connected to any of the gate signal lines and the drain signal lines formed over the substrate; and

wherein a plurality of counter electrodes are formed in the plurality of pixel regions in correspondence with the plurality of pixel electrodes, the counter electrodes being connected to at least one counter electrode line, and the covering layer being formed without being electrically connected to the at least one counter electrode line.

2. A display device according to claim 1 , wherein the covering layer is made of a transparent conductive material.

3. A display device according to claim 2 , wherein the covering layer is made of a material which is the same as a material of the plurality of pixel electrodes.

4. A display device according to claim 1 , wherein the covering layer is made of a metal layer.

5. A display device according to claim 4 , wherein the covering layer is a testing terminal of the display device.

6. A display device according to claim 1 , wherein the display device is an organic EL display device, and the organic interlayer film is a bank film of the organic EL display device.

7. A display device according to claim 1 , wherein the covering layer is made of a material which is the same as a material of the plurality of pixel electrodes.

8. A display device according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of counter electrodes are formed adjacent to the plurality of pixel electrodes, and wherein the covering layer is made of a material which is the same as a material of the plurality of counter electrodes.

9. A display device according to claim 1 , wherein the organic interlayer film continuously extends over an area which is smaller than an area over which the inorganic insulation film continuously extends.

10. A display device according to claim 1 , wherein the covering layer is formed of discrete portions which are spaced from one another.

11. A display device according to claim 1 , wherein the covering layer is formed so as to continuously extend on at least a portion of the top surface and the side surface of the step region at the outer end of the organic interlayer film and at least a portion of the inorganic insulation film which extends over another part of the peripheral portion of the substrate.

12. A display device according to claim 1 , wherein the organic interlayer film is directly formed on the inorganic insulation film.

13. A display device according to claim 1 , wherein the covering layer covers an entirety of the step region at the outer end of the organic interlayer film.

14. A display device according to claim 1 , wherein the covering layer is formed directly on the organic interlayer film and the inorganic insulating film.

15. A display device according to claim 1 , wherein the covering layer is formed on the side surface of the step region of the outer end of the inorganic insulation film adjacent to and facing the end of the substrate.

16. A display device according to claim 15 , wherein the covering layer is formed on at least a part of the side surface of the step region of the outer end of the inorganic insulation film which faces the end of the substrate only in the peripheral portion of the substrate and outside of the display portion of the substrate.
