Abstract

Biodegradable compositions that include a foamed gelling hydrocolloid system to which a firming agent and a fibrous material, with or without other optional components, are added. When articles prepared from such compositions are coated with a suitable coating, they are impervious to boiling water and able to withstand microwave heating.

Claims (19)

1. A composition comprising:

a matrix comprising a foamed gelling hydrocolloid system;

a fibrous material embedded in said matrix; and

a firming agent embedded in said matrix.

2. The composition of claim 1 further comprising a foaming agent.

3. The composition of claim 1 further comprising a humectant.

4. A biodegradable composition comprising a substantially homogenous mixture of a foamed gelling hydrocolloid system, a firming agent, and a fibrous material.

5. The biodegradable composition of claim 4 wherein said firming agent is selected from the group consisting of flours, wheat flour, pea flour, clays, sawdust, starches, and other water-insoluble, water-adsorbing and/or water-absorbing particulates.

6. The biodegradable composition of claim 4 wherein said fibrous material is selected from the group consisting of particulated cellulose fibers including recycled paper, sugar-cane residues, corn stover, sugar beet residues, coconut husk (coir dust), cotton linters, citrus residues, and sawdust, and/or particulated fibers prepared from coagula or extruded fibers of water-insoluble biopolymers.

7. An article of manufacture made from the composition of claim 4 .

8. The biodegradable composition of claim 4 wherein said substantially homogenous mixture is formed by adding one or more hydrocolloid gelling agents, one or more firming agents and a fibrous material to solution, and wherein the concentration of said one or more hydrocolloid gelling agents in solution is about 0.5 percent by weight to about 6 percent by weight, the concentration of said one or more firming agents in solution is about 2 percent by weight to about 20 percent by weight, and the concentration of said fibrous material in solution is about 2 percent by weight to about 30 percent by weight.

9. The biodegradable composition of claim 4 wherein said firming agent is pre-hydrated.

10. The biodegradable composition of claim 4 wherein said fibrous material is pre-hydrated.

11. The biodegradable composition of claim 4 wherein said foamed gelling hydrocolloid system comprises one or more polysaccharides.

12. The biodegradable composition of claim 11 wherein said foamed gelling hydrocolloid system is selected from the group consisting of agar, agarose, aloe mannans/xanthan, aloe mannan (deacetylated), algin/alginates, water-insoluble alginates, borate complexes of 1,3-cis diols, carrageenans, cassia gum/xanthan, chitosan, chitosan/alginate, chitosan/carrageenan, curdlan, gellan, guar gum/xanthan, hyaluronic acid, konjac, deacetylated konjac, konjac/xanthan, locust bean gum/xanthan, cassia/xanthan, pectins, and combinations or derivatives thereof.

13. The biodegradable composition of claim 4 further comprising a foaming agent.

14. The biodegradable composition of claim 13 wherein said foaming agent is selected from the group consisting of polymeric foaming agents, surfactants and mixtures thereof.

15. The biodegradable composition of claim 4 further comprising a humectant.

16. The biodegradable composition of claim 15 wherein said humectant is selected from the group consisting of glycerin, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, mannitol, sorbitol, and polyethylene glycols.
