Abstract

A cable tester comprises a test initiating module that performs B cable tests. Each of said B cable tests includes selectively transmitting a test pulse on the cable, measuring a reflection amplitude, and calculating a cable length. A test results module determines a cable status for each of said B cable tests based on said measured amplitude and said calculated cable length and that determines an overall cable status of the cable based on the cable at least one of passing and failing A out of B cable tests. A and B are integers greater than zero and B is greater than A.

Claims (27)

1. A cable tester, comprising:

a test initiating module that performs B cable tests, wherein each of said B cable tests includes selectively transmitting a test pulse on the cable, measuring a reflection amplitude, and calculating a cable length; and

a test results module that determines a cable status for each of said B cable tests based on said measured amplitude and said calculated cable length and that determines an overall cable status of the cable based on the cable at least one of passing and failing A out of B cable tests,

wherein A and B are integers greater than zero and B is greater than A.

2. The cable tester of claim 1 further comprising an indicator for displaying at least one of said cable status, said calculated cable length and said measured reflection amplitude for at least one of said B cable tests.

3. The cable tester of claim 1 wherein said cable tester is implemented in a network device.

4. The cable tester of claim 1 wherein said cable tester is implemented in a physical layer device.

5. The cable tester on claim 1 wherein said cable tester is integrated with a physical layer device in a single integrated circuit.

6. The cable tester of claim 4 wherein said physical layer device is implemented in an Ethernet device that is 802.3ab compliant.

7. A cable tester, comprising:

test initiating means for performing B cable tests, wherein each of said B cable tests includes selectively transmitting a test pulse on the cable, measuring a reflection amplitude, and calculating a cable length; and

test results means for determining a cable status for each of said B tests based on said measured amplitude and said calculated cable length and for determining an overall cable status of the cable based on the cable at least one of passing and failing A out of B cable tests,

wherein A and B are integers greater than zero and B is greater than A.

8. The cable tester of claim 7 further comprising indicating means for displaying at least one of said cable status, said calculated cable length and said measured reflection amplitude for at least one of said B cable tests.

9. The cable tester of claim 7 wherein said cable tester is implemented in a network device.

10. The cable tester of claim 7 wherein said cable tester is implemented in a physical layer device.

11. The cable tester on claim 7 wherein said cable tester is integrated with a physical layer device in a single integrated circuit.

12. The cable tester of claim 10 wherein said physical layer device is implemented in an Ethernet device that is 802.3ab compliant.

13. A method for testing cable and determining a cable status, comprising:

performing B cable tests, wherein each of said B cable tests includes:

selectively transmitting a test pulse on the cable;

measuring a reflection amplitude; and

calculating a cable length;

determining a cable status for each of said B cable tests based on said measured amplitude and said calculated cable length; and

storing an overall cable status of the cable based on the cable at least passing and failing A out of B cable tests,

wherein A and B are integers greater than zero and B is greater than A.

14. The method of claim 13 further comprising displaying at least one of said cable status, said calculated cable length and said measured reflection amplitude for at least one of said B cable tests.
