Abstract

The present invention relates to a tissue shaping device adapted to be disposed in a vessel near a patient's heart to reshape the patient's heart. The device comprises a first anchor and a second anchor adapted to be deployed by a catheter to engage a vessel wall while the first anchor is adapted to resist the compression of a first part of the first anchor and resist the expansion of a second part of the first anchor in response to a compressive force on the first part.

Claims (11)

1. A method of performing mitral valve annuloplasty on a patient's heart comprising:

percutaneously delivering a mitral valve device to a coronary sinus, the mitral valve device comprising a first expandable anchor, a second expandable anchor, and an elongate body extending therebetween, the elongate body defining a longitudinal axis of the mitral valve device;

anchoring the first anchor in an anchored configuration in the coronary sinus, wherein in the anchored configuration the first anchor comprises a flexible elongate member and a securing member for securing a first and second end of the flexible elongate member therein at a distal end of the securing member, the securing member generally aligned with the elongate body along the longitudinal axis, a first segment of the flexible elongate member extending from a distal end of the first anchor to a proximal end of the first anchor to engage the elongate body proximal the securing member, and a second segment of the flexible elongate member extending from where the first segment engages the elongate body to the distal end of the first anchor, the first segment engaging the second segment to form at least one full twist around the second segment in a central portion of the first anchor in which the first segment passes over the second segment and then under the second segment and in which the second segment passes under the first segment and then over the first segment, the first and second segments forming a figure-8 configuration; and

anchoring the second anchor in the coronary sinus.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein anchoring the first anchor comprises allowing the first anchor to self-expand.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising locking the first anchor in the anchored configuration.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the first and second wire segments each comprise a bending point configured such that the first and second segments preferentially bend at the bending points during expansion and collapse.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the first anchor, when fully expanded extracorporally, has a width measured between the first and second wire segments that is greater than a height measured from the securing member to the apex, whereby the width is measured orthogonally to the height.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the elongate body extends into a proximal end of the wire securing member.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising deploying the first expandable anchor from a collapsed delivery configuration within a delivery device to a self-expanded configuration outside of the delivery device, wherein the deploying step causes the apex to move radially outward relative to the securing member.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the first segment remains passing over the second segment and then under the second segment and in which the second segment remains passing under the first segment and then over the first segment in response to localized forces applied at different times to the first and second segments, either distal to or proximal to the twisted region.
