Abstract

A loudspeaker, such as a subwoofer, includes demonstration audio file stored in a memory which can be played without connecting the loudspeaker to a separate piece of audio equipment.

Claims (33)

1 . A loudspeaker comprising:

a housing;

a speaker located in the housing;

a digital signal processor located in the housing;

a memory located in the housing, the memory being coupled to the digital signal processor;

an amplifier coupled to the digital signal processor;

a speaker driver coupled to the amplifier and to the speaker; and

a demonstration audio file stored in the memory, the digital signal processor being programmed to selectively retrieve the demonstration audio file and play it through the speaker without connecting the loudspeaker to a separate piece of audio equipment.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising means for updating the demonstration audio file stored in the memory.

3 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the demonstration audio file is optimized for capabilities of the loudspeaker.

4 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a user input device on the housing, the user input device being used to instruct the digital signal processor to retrieve the demonstration audio file and play it through the speaker.

5 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a display located on the housing, the display being coupled to the digital signal processor.

6 . A method for demonstrating a loudspeaker comprising:

providing a speaker, a digital signal processor, a memory coupled to the digital signal processor, an amplifier, and a speaker driver coupled to the speaker within a housing;

storing a demonstration audio file in the memory located within the housing; and

executing a demonstration mode wherein the demonstration audio file is retrieved by the digital signal processor and played through the speaker using the amplifier and speaker driver in the housing without connecting the loudspeaker to external audio equipment.

7 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising updating the demonstration audio file stored in the memory.

8 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the demonstration audio file is optimized for capabilities of the loudspeaker.

9 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising providing a user input device on the housing, the user input device being used during the step of executing the demonstration mode.

10 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising compressing the demonstration audio file stored in the memory and decompressing the demonstration audio file for playback during the demonstration mode.

11 . A loudspeaker comprising:

a housing;

a speaker located within the housing;

a controller located in the housing for driving the speaker; and

a sound pressure level (SPL) detector located in the housing to measure a SPL of an output of the speaker.

12 . The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising a display located on the housing and means for displaying the measured SPL level detected by the SPL detector on the display.

13 . The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the means for displaying the measured SPL level also displays a frequency output of the speaker corresponding to the SPL level on the display.

14 . The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the SPL level is displayed as a bar graph on the display.

15 . The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the housing includes a front surface and a top surface, the speaker being mounted in an opening formed in the front surface, and the display being mounted on the top surface.

16 . The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the display is a LCD.

17 . The apparatus of claim 12 , further comprising an array of control buttons located on the housing adjacent to display.

18 . The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the array of control buttons includes an up key, a down key, a left key, and a right key, the up and down keys being used to scroll through a list of control options for the loudspeaker displayed on the display and the left and right keys being used to make adjustments to a control setting of a selected control option.

19 . The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising a USB chip coupled to the controller and a USB port coupled to a housing, the USB port and the USB chip being configured to connect the controller to a personal computer.
