Abstract

A display device operating in accordance with a sub-field process, includes a first block which varies the number of bits of a received image signal, a second block which calculates an average picture level (APL) of images defined by the image signal transmitted from the first block, a third block which converts the image signal into sub-field coding data, and outputs the sub-field coding data to a display panel, and a fourth block which receives the average picture level from the second block, converts the received average picture level to the number of sustaining pulses, transmits the number of sustaining pulses to the display panel, and transmits the number of sustaining pulses to the third block, wherein the third block selects the number of bits of a signal to be input thereinto, in accordance with the number of sustaining pulses received from the fourth block.

Claims (21)

1. A display device which displays images in accordance with a sub-field method, said display device comprising:

a first block that calculates an average picture level (APL) of images determined by an image signal;

a second block that converts said image signal to subfield coding data, and outputs said sub-field coding data to a display panel; and

a third block that controls a number of display grayscales of said sub-field coding data based on said average picture level,

wherein when said average picture level is lower than a predetermined level, said third block sets said number of display grayscales of said sub-field coding data equal to or greater than a number of display grayscales of said subfield coding data that is set when the average picture level is equal to or higher than said predetermined level.

2. The display device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein

said third block has functions of setting a sustain pulse number based on said average picture level and supplying said sustain pulse number to said display panel, and

when said average picture level is lower than a predetermined level, said third block sets said sustain pulse number equal to or greater than a sustain pulse number supplied to said display panel when the average picture level is equal to or higher than said predetermined level.

3. The display device as claimed in claim 2 , wherein a number of subfields is fixed without respect to said average picture level.

4. The display device as claimed in claim 2 , wherein said third block sets a number of subfields when said number of sustain pulses is equal to or greater than a predetermined number to be equal to or greater than a number of subfields set when said number of sustain pulses is lower than said predetermined number.

5. The display device as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising a fourth block that performs a processing of spatially diffusing a grayscale of an image obtainable by low-order bits of said image signal and supplies an image signal after said processing to said first and second blocks as said image signal.

6. The display device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said third block changes said number of display grayscales of said sub-field coding data when a change of a scene by said image signal is detected.

7. A method of displaying images on a display device in accordance with a sub-field method, said display device comprising the steps of;

calculating an average picture level (APL) of images determined by an image signal;

converting said image signal to sub-field coding data, and outputting said sub-field coding data to a display panel; and

setting, when said average picture level is lower than a predetermined level, a number of display grayscales of said sub-field coding data equal to or greater than a number of display grayscales of said sub-field coding data that is set when the average picture level is equal to or higher than said predetermined level.

8. The method as claimed in claim 7 , further comprising a step of setting a sustain pulse number based on said average picture level and supplying said sustain pulse number to said display panel, and wherein when said average picture level is lower than a predetermined level, said sustain pulse number is set to be equal to or greater than a sustain pulse number supplied to said display panel when the average picture level is equal to or higher than said predetermined level.

9. The method as claimed in claim 8 , wherein a number of subfields when said number of sustain pulses is equal to or greater than a predetermined number is set to be equal to or greater than a number of subfields that is set when said number of sustain pulses is lower than said predetermined number.

10. The method as claimed in claim 8 , wherein a processing of spatially diffusing a grayscale of an image obtainable by low-order bits of said image signal is performed, and an image signal after said processing is processed as said image signal.

11. The method as claimed in claim 7 , wherein a number of subfields is fixed without respect to said average picture level.

12. The method as claimed in claim 7 , wherein said number of display grayscales of said sub-field coding data is changed when a change of a scene determined by said image signal is detected.
