Abstract

Diffractive pigment flakes are selectively aligned to form an image. In one embodiment, flakes having a magnetic layer are shaped to facilitate alignment in a magnetic field. In another embodiment, the flakes include a magnetically discontinuous layer. In a particular embodiment, deposition of nickel on a diffraction grating pattern produces magnetic needles along the grating pattern that allow magnetic alignment of the resulting diffractive pigment flakes. Color scans of test samples of magnetically aligned flakes show high differentiation between illumination parallel and perpendicular to the direction of alignment of the magnetic diffractive pigment flakes. In another embodiment diffractive pigment flakes are selectively aligned by electrical fields. In other embodiments, special diffractive optical variable images are described and the method to produce them.

Claims (18)

1. An orientable pigment particle comprising:

a material forming or having formed therein, a diffraction grating having a predetermined pattern of lines or ridges, wherein the diffraction grating pattern facilitates orientation of the pigment particle in a direction along the lines or ridges of the grating pattern in the presence of an applied force field.

2. An orientable pigment particle as defined in claim 1 , wherein the material is a magnetic material and wherein the pigment particle is a pigment flake, and wherein the force field is a magnetic field.

3. A magnetically orientable pigment particle as defined in claim 2 , wherein the material comprises a plurality of stripes forming the diffraction grating.

4. The magnetically orientable pigment particle of claim 2 , wherein the material comprises nickel, cobalt, iron, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, erbium, Fe—Si alloy, Fe—Ni alloy, Fe—Co alloy, Fe—Ni—Mo alloy, SmCo 5 , NdCo 5 , Sm 2 Co 17 , Nd 2 Fe 14 B, TbFe 2 , Fe 3 O 4 , NiFe 2 O 4 , or CoFe 2 O 4 and wherein the force field is a magnetic field.

5. The pigment particle of claim 2 wherein the material comprises magnetic needles forming the diffraction grating disposed parallel to a plurality of grooves within the pigment particle, and wherein the force field is a magnetic field.

6. The pigment particle of claim 5 wherein at least some of the magnetic needles are joined with intervening magnetic material, and wherein the plurality of grooves are formed of a magnetic material.

7. A pigment particle as defined in claim 1 , wherein the pigment particle comprises a semi-transparent material, and wherein the force field is a magnetic or electric field.

8. The orientable pigment particle of claim 1 wherein the material has the diffraction grating formed therein and wherein the diffraction grating comprises a plurality of grooves, and wherein the force field is a magnetic or electric field.

9. The pigment particle of claim 8 wherein the plurality of grooves have a spacing of between 100 lines per mm and 5000 lines per mm.

10. The pigment particle of claim 1 wherein the material is a layer of magnetic material having a varying thickness and wherein the force field is a magnetic field.

11. The pigment particle as defined in claim 1 wherein the material is a magnetic material that is a continuous layer and wherein the force field is a magnetic field.
