Abstract

The present invention provides a method of securing a suture. The method includes providing a retainer having first and second sections. The first section has a central post, and the second section has a central bore dimensioned to receive the central post. The method also includes moving a suture through a passage in the first section, wrapping the suture around the central post, and moving the suture through a channel of the second section. The method further includes interconnecting the first and second sections with the central post positioned in the central bore and with the suture disposed between the first and second sections. Moreover, the method includes bonding the first and second sections together to secure the suture relative to the retainer.

Claims (53)

1. A method of securing a suture, the method comprising:

providing a retainer having first and second sections, the first section having a post and the second section having a bore dimensioned to receive the post;

moving a suture through a passage in the first section;

wrapping the suture around the post;

moving the suture through a passage of the second section;

moving the post to at least partially extend into the bore until the first section contacts a stop member on the second section, wherein the post is disposed within the bore to a first extent, and with the suture disposed between the first and second sections, a portion of the suture movable through the retainer;

moving the post further into the bore, to be disposed within the bore to a second greater extent, whereby a portion of the suture is pressed between the first section and the second section and is no longer movable through the retainer; and

bonding the first and second sections together to secure the suture relative to the retainer.

The method of claim 1 , wherein bonding the first and second sections together includes bonding a mating surface of the first section to a mating surface of the second section and wherein one of the mating surfaces includes a projection and wherein the projection is bonded to one of the mating surfaces.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein wrapping includes creating a plurality of turns around the post with the suture.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein bonding includes gripping the plurality of turns between a mating surface of the first section and a mating surface of the second section.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein bonding includes applying energy to the first and second sections.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein applying energy includes applying ultrasonic energy to the first and second sections.

7. The method of claim 1 further including tensioning the suture prior to bonding the first and second sections.

8. A method of securing a suture, the method comprising:

providing a retainer having first and second sections, the first section having a post and the second section having a bore dimensioned to receive the post;

positioning a first portion of a suture through a first passage in the first section, around the post of the first section, and through a first passage in the second section;

positioning a second portion of the suture through a second passage in the first section, around the post of the first section, and through a second passage in the second section;

interconnecting the first and second sections by moving the post to at least partially extend into the bore a first distance, and with the first and second portions of the suture disposed between the first and second sections, whereby the first and second suture portions are movable with respect to the retainer;

moving the post further into the bore, to extend into the bore a second, greater distance, whereby portions of the first portion of the suture and portions of the second portion of the suture are pressed between the first section and the second section and are no longer movable with respect to the retainer; and

bonding the first and second sections together to lock the first and second portions of the suture relative to the retainer.

9. The method of claim 8 further including positioning an intermediate portion of the suture against tissue, the intermediate portion located between the first and second portions of the suture.

10. The method of claim 8 wherein the first and second sections each include a mating surface and one of the mating surfaces includes a plurality of projections and wherein bonding the first and second section together includes bonding the projections with one of the mating surfaces.

The method of claim 8 wherein positioning the first portion of the suture includes creating a first plurality of turns around the post with the first portion of the suture and wherein positioning the second portion of the suture includes creating a second plurality of turns around the post with the second portion of the suture.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein interconnecting includes moving the first and second pluralities of turns longitudinally along the post.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein bonding includes gripping the first and second pluralities of turns between a mating surface of the first section and a mating surface of the second section.

14. The method of claim 8 wherein bonding includes applying energy to the first and second sections.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein applying energy includes applying ultrasonic energy to the first and second sections.

16. The method of claim 8 further including tensioning the suture prior to bonding the first and second sections.

17. A method of securing a suture relative to body tissue of a patient, the method comprising:

implanting at least a portion of a retainer in body tissue of the patient, the retainer having first and second sections, and a post extending between the first and second sections;

moving a portion of a suture through the retainer, wherein the suture is looped around the post and is movable with respect to the retainer;

tensioning the suture; and

securing the suture with respect to the retainer such that the suture is secured relative to the body tissue and the retainer,

wherein the suture is secured with respect to the retainer at a location spaced from the post.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising:

positioning a cannula relative to tissue in a patient's body;

moving the suture through the cannula and into engagement with the tissue; and

moving the retainer through the cannula.

19. The method of claim 17 , wherein securing the suture with respect to the retainer includes bonding the first and second sections of the retainer together.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein the first and second sections of the retainer are bonded together with ultrasonic energy.

21. The method of claim 17 , wherein the post is cylindrical.

22. The method of claim 17 , wherein the retainer is made of a degradable material.

23. The method of claim 17 , wherein the retainer includes at least textured surface to grip body tissue.

24. The method of claim 17 , wherein at least a portion of the retainer deforms to secure the suture with respect to the retainer.

25. The method of claim 17 , wherein at least a portion of the retainer radially deflects sideways as the suture is secured.

26. The method of claim 17 , wherein the post is located in a leading end of the retainer, and the suture is secured at a trailing end of the retainer.

27. The method of claim 17 , wherein the post is connected to the first section of the retainer, and is extendable into the second section of the retainer, the first and second sections being separable.

28. The method of claim 17 , wherein the first and second sections are made of different materials.

29. The method of claim 17 , wherein at least a portion of the retainer deforms when heated.

30. The method of claim 17 , wherein at least a portion of the retainer deforms with the application of pressure.

31. The method of claim 17 , further including attaching an applicator to the retainer, the applicator operative to cause a deformation of the retainer.

32. The method of claim 17 , wherein the retainer is implanted in bone or soft tissue.
