Abstract

A method for the preparation of a composite product, as well as the composite product. The composite product comprises at least two layers. At least one of the layers is of wood or another cellulose-containing material. The process comprises differentially treating the layers prior to, during, or after the lamination of the layers into a composite product.

Claims (47)

1. A method of preparing a composite product comprising the steps of:

a) providing a first veneer containing at least one agent selected from the group consisting of biocides, water repellents, pigments, strength enhancers, hardening compounds, fire retardants, and UV blockers;

b) providing a second veneer containing at least one agent selected from the group consisting of biocides, water repellents, pigments, strength enhancers, hardening compounds, fire retardants, and UV blockers; and

c) assembling said veneers to produce a composite product;

wherein said second veneer 1) contains either a fewer or a greater number of the agents than said first veneer or said second veneer 2) contains either a greater or lesser concentration of one of the agents.

2. A method of preparing a composite product comprising the steps of:

a) providing a first veneer;

b) pressure or vacuum treating said first veneer with at least one agent selected from the group consisting of biocides, water repellents, pigments, strength enhancers, hardening compounds, fire retardants, and UV blockers;

c) providing a second veneer;

d) either pressure or vacuum treating said second veneer with at least one agent selected from the group consisting of biocides, water repellents, pigments, strength enhancers, hardening compounds, fire retardants, and UV blockers; and

e) assembling said veneers to produce a composite product;

wherein said second veneer 1) is treated with either a greater or a fewer number of the agents than said first veneer or said second veneer 2) is treated with either a higher or lower concentration of one of the agents.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the biocide is a fungicide, insecticide, bactericide, moldicide, or termiticide.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the biocide is a fungicide, insecticide, bactericide, moldicide, or tenniticide.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pigment is an inorganic pigment.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein the pigment is an inorganic pigment.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein inorganic pigment is selected from the group consisting of iron oxides, carbon black, iron hydroxide, graphite, aluminum-based pigments, pearlescent pigments, calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide, bismuth oxide; bismuth hydroxide, bismuth carbonate, copper carbonate, copper hydroxide, basic copper carbonate, silicon oxide, zinc carbonate, barium carbonate, barium hydroxide, strontium carbonate, zinc oxide, zinc phosphate, zinc chromate, bariumchromate, chrome oxide, titanium dioxide, zinc sulfide, antimony oxide, lead chrome, and cadmium pigments.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the UV blockers are complex substituted aromatic compounds, complex hindered tertiary amines or antioxidants.

9. The method of claim 2 , wherein the UV blockers are complex substituted aromatic compounds, complex hindered tertiary amines or antioxidants.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fire retardants are selected from the group consisting of phosphorus compounds, boron compounds, metal carbonates, metal hydroxides, organic halogens, antimony compounds and ureas.

11. The method of claim 2 , wherein the fire retardants are selected from the group consisting of phosphorus compounds, boron compounds, metal carbonates, metal hydroxides, organic halogens, antimony compounds and ureas.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first veneer is a finishing layer.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first veneer and the second veneer are laminated in the composite product.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the first veneer contains at least one pigment and the second veneer contains at least one biocide.

15. The method of claim 2 , wherein the first veneer is treated with at least one pigment and the second veneer is treated with at least one biocide.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first veneer contains a higher concentration of at least one pigment than the second veneer.

17. The method of claim 2 , wherein the first veneer contains a higher concentration of at least one pigment than the second veneer.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first veneer contains a higher concentration of at least one biocide than the second veneer.

19. The method of claim 2 , wherein the first veneer contains a higher concentration of at least one biocide than the second veneer.

20. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first veneer contains a higher concentration of at least one water repellant than the second veneer.

21. The method of claim 2 , wherein the first veneer contains a higher concentration of at least one water repellant than the second veneer.

22. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first veneer contains a higher concentration of at least one strength enhancer than the second veneer.

23. The method of claim 2 , wherein the first veneer contains a higher concentration of at least one strength enhancer than the second veneer.

24. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first veneer contains a higher concentration of at least one fire retardant than the second veneer.

25. The method of claim 2 , wherein the first veneer contains a higher concentration of at least one fire retardant than the second veneer.

26. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first veneer contains a higher concentration of at least one UV blockers than the second veneer.

27. The method of claim 2 , wherein the first veneer contains a higher concentration of at least one UV blockers than the second veneer.

28. A composite product produced by the method of claim 1 .

29. A composite product produced by the method of claim 2 .

30. A composite product comprising:

a) a first veneer containing at least one agent selected from the group consisting of biocides, water repellents, pigments, strength enhancers, hardening compounds, fire retardants, and UV blockers; and

b) a second veneer containing at least one agent selected from the group consisting of biocides, water repellents, pigments, strength enhancers, hardening compounds, fire retardants, and UV blockers;

wherein said second veneer 1) contains either a fewer or a greater number of the agents than said first veneer or said second veneer 2) contains either a greater or lesser concentration of one of the agents.
