Abstract

A variety of structures, methods, systems, and configurations can support plasmons for logic.

Claims (16)

1. A plasmon logic element, comprising:

a first plasmon, guide extending from an input location to an output location;

a first electromagnetically nonlinear structure interposed at a first central location intermediate the input location and output location, the first electromagnetically nonlinear structure being responsive to electromagnetic energy to control plasmon propagation past the first central location;

a second plasmon guide extending from a second input location to a second output location;

a second electromagnetically nonlinear structure interposed at a second central location intermediate to the second input location and second output location; and

wherein the first output location is operably connected to the second input location and wherein at least one of the first and second electromagnetically nonlinear structures includes at least one discrete particle supportive of two or more resonant modes.

2. A plasmon logic element, comprising:

a first plasmon guide extending from an input location to an output location;

a first electromagnetically nonlinear structure interposed at a first central location intermediate the input location and output location, the first electromagnetically nonlinear structure being responsive to electromagnetic energy to control plasmon propagation past the first central location; and wherein the first plasmon guide includes one or more discrete particles, each particle being electromagnetically responsive at a plasmon frequency, and wherein at least one of the one or more discrete articles is supportive of two or more different resonant modes.

3. The plasmon logic element of claim 2 wherein at least one of the discrete particles includes a metal.

4. The plasmon logic element of claim 2 wherein at least one of the discrete particles includes a nanoparticle.

5. The plasmon logic element of claim 2 wherein the electromagnetically nonlinear structure includes a nonlinear material proximate to at least one of the discrete particles.

6. The plasmon logic element of claim 5 wherein the nonlinear material substantially surrounds at least one of the discrete particles.

7. The plasmon logic element of claim 2 wherein at least one of the discrete particles is configured to electromagnetically couple to a different one of the discrete particles.

8. The plasmon logic element of claim 2 wherein at least two of the two or more different resonant modes have different frequencies.

9. The plasmon logic element of claim 2 wherein at least two of the two or more different resonant modes have different spatial distributions.
