Abstract

A method for IP [=Internet Protocol] communication between a mobile terminal and its correspondent node in a mobile radio network. The method comprises establishing ( 2 - 2 ) an IP connection between the mobile terminal and its correspondent node. After detecting a period of inactivity in the IP connection, ( 2 - 4 ) keep-alive messages are sent via the IP connection at predetermined intervals, which are varied. The method comprises monitoring ( 2 - 6 ) the lengths of several periods of inactivity at which the mobile radio network disconnects the IP connection. Based on the monitored lengths of periods of inactivity, a maximum interval (T INT ) between keep-alive messages is determined ( 2 - 8 ) such that the maximum interval meets a predetermined criterion of statistical confidence, and the interval between keep-alive messages is set ( 2 - 10 ) to the maximum interval (T INT ).

Claims (15)

1. A method for Internet Protocol communication between a mobile terminal and a node in a mobile radio network, the method comprising:

establishing an Internet Protocol connection between the mobile terminal and node;

sending keep-alive messages via the Internet Protocol connection at predetermined and variable intervals, the keep-alive messages sent in response to detecting a period of inactivity in the Internet Protocol connection, the keep-alive messages sent from the mobile terminal;

monitoring the lengths of several periods of inactivity at which the mobile radio network disconnects the Internet Protocol connection;

determining a maximum interval between keep-alive messages based on the several monitored lengths of periods of inactivity such that the maximum interval meets a predetermined criterion of statistical confidence; and

setting the interval between keep-alive messages to the maximum determined interval.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising storing the maximum determined interval at the mobile terminal and in association with an identifier of the mobile radio network.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sending the maximum determined interval in association with the identifier of the mobile radio network to the home network of the mobile terminal for storage and future inquiry.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein meeting a predetermined criterion of statistical confidence includes subtracting a safety margin from the detected maximum inactivity period.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the safety margin is expressed in minutes.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the safety margin is expressed as a percentage.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the safety margin is proportional to the predictability of behavior of the mobile radio network.

8. The method of claim 4 , wherein the safety margin corresponds to a cost associated with the mobile terminal.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the cost corresponds to battery life of the mobile terminal.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the cost corresponds to a tariff for sending keep-alive messages from the mobile terminal.
