Multipiece bone implant
An implant comprising two or more bone fragments that are combined to form a single unit. Cancellous bone or cortical bone is removed from a source and fashioned into bone components with desirable shapes and sizes. The bone components may be integrated to form implants for implantation in the body. Bone stock may be formed by combining sections of various bones of the body, and the bone stock may be further fashioned for use as implants with particular geometries.
1 . An implant for insertion into a body comprising:
a first piece having a first coupling portion; and
a second piece having a second coupling portion;
wherein the first and second pieces are joined together by interfitting the first and second coupling portions; and
wherein the first piece is at least partially dehydrated or demineralized to create a more secure fit with the second piece.
2 . The implant of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first and second pieces is comprised of bone.
3 . The implant of claim 1 , wherein the first piece comprises a first bore, and the second piece comprises a second bore, and further comprising a fastener extending through the first and second bores.
4 . The implant of claim 3 , wherein the first bore extending through the first coupling portion.
5 . The implant of claim 1 , wherein the first piece comprises an outer surface having teeth.
6 . An implant for insertion into a body comprising:
a first bone fragment having a first coupling portion including a first protrusion; and
a second bone fragment having a second coupling portion including a first depression;
wherein the first and second piece are joined together by interfitting the first protrusion and the first depression; and
wherein the first piece is at least partially dehydrated or demineralized to create a more secure fit with the second piece.
7 . The implant of claim 6 , wherein the first bone fragment comprises a first bore, and the second bone fragment comprises a second bore, and further comprising a fastener extending through the first and second bores.
8 . The implant of claim 7 , wherein the first bore extends through the first protrusion.
9 . The implant of claim 6 , wherein the first bone fragment is comprised of cortical bone, and wherein the second bone fragment is comprised of cancellous bone.
10 . The implant of claim 6 , wherein the first bone fragment is comprised of cancellous bone, and wherein the second bone fragment is comprised of cortical bone.
11 . The implant of claim 6 , wherein the first bone fragment comprises an outer surface having teeth.
12 . An implant for insertion into a body comprising:
a inner piece having a bore, and disposed at least partially within an outer piece; and
a core disposed at least partially within the bore of the inner piece;
wherein at one of the core and the inner piece is at least partially dehydrated or demineralized to create a more secure fit between the core and the inner piece.
13 . The implant of claim 12 , wherein the core is comprised of cancellous bone.
14 . The implant of claim 12 , wherein the inner piece comprises a first bore, and the outer piece comprises a second bore, and further comprising a fastener extending through the first and second bores.
15 . An implant for insertion into a body comprising:
a first piece having a first coupling portion having a first protrusion; and
a second piece having second coupling portion having a first recess;
wherein the first and second pieces are joined together by interfitting the first and second coupling portions;
wherein the first and second pieces form a bore when joined together; and
wherein the first piece is at least partially dehydrated or demineralized to create a more secure fit with the second piece.
16 . The implant of claim 15 , wherein at least one of the first and second pieces is comprised of bone.
17 . The implant of claim 15 , further comprising a core disposed at least partially within the bore.
18 . The implant of claim 17 , wherein the core is comprised of cancellous bone.
19 . The implant of claim 15 , wherein the first coupling portion further comprises a second recess, and the second coupling portion further comprises a second protrusion.
20 . The implant of claim 15 , wherein the first coupling portion further comprises a second protrusion, and the second coupling portion further comprises a second recess.
