Abstract

Disclosed is a method for controlling usage times for at least one device, including the steps of: (a) identifying a device to be controlled; (b) utilizing the device by a user; (c) tracking a device usage value for the device as the user utilizes the device; and (d) initiating an action sequence based upon the device usage value. Also disclosed is an apparatus for controlling usage times for at least one device.

Claims (51)

1. A method utilizing a software program to control time spent utilizing a plurality of electronic entertainment devices, at least one of which is a television and a gaming console, the method comprising the steps of:

accepting for input of an allotment of time;

monitoring a usage time of the plurality of electronic entertainment devices;

comparing the usage time to the allotment of time;

initiating a warning sequence when a total of the usage time of the plurality of electronic entertainment devices is approaching the allotment of time; and

switching at least one of the plurality of electronic entertainment devices off when the usage time is equal to or has exceeded the allotment of time;

wherein the step of accepting for input of an allotment of time comprises the steps of:

creating an account for a user of the plurality of electronic entertainment devices;

assigning the allotment of time to the account;

assigning at least one of the plurality of electronic entertainment devices to the account; and

linking at least one of the plurality of electronic entertainment devices with the allotment of time.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of creating an account for the user comprises at least one of the steps of:

associating a name with the account; and

associating a password with the account.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of assigning the allotment of time to the account comprises at least one of the steps of:

assigning a period of time to correspond to the allotment of time;

setting either a restricted or unrestricted allotment of time;

setting a limit on at least one of weekday hours and weekend hours;

allowing for a budget allotment of time to coincide with usage of one of the plurality of electronic entertainment devices; and

allowing for a carryover, to another allotment of time, of time not used during the allotment of time.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of monitoring the usage time of the plurality of electronic entertainment devices further comprises at least one of the steps of:

tracking a total of the usage time of the plurality of electronic entertainment devices; and

creating summarizing statistics as to a user with regard to the usage time of the plurality of electronic entertainment devices.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of comparing the usage time to the allotment of time further comprises the step of:

assessing whether a total of the usage time of the plurality of electronic entertainment devices is equal to or has exceeded the allotment of time.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of switching at least one of the plurality of electronic entertainment devices off comprises the step of:

determining which of the at least one of the plurality of electronic entertainment devices to switch off.

7. The method according to claim 1 , the method further comprising the step of:

allowing for a study mode, wherein all use of the plurality of electronic entertainment devices is logged.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the software program is resident on a computer.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the allotment of time is a set of parameters corresponding to at least one of: a period of time; a specific day; and a date.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the allotment of time can be associated with a user of the plurality of electronic entertainment devices.

11. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the allotment of time can be changed.

12. An apparatus for managing an allotment of usage time for a user as between a computer and a plurality of electronic entertainment devices, at least one of which is a television and a gaming console, the apparatus comprising:

a controller, operated by software, which causes an on/off signal to be originated based on a comparison of the user's allotment of usage time to the user's actual usage time of the computer and the plurality of electronic entertainment devices;

a switch, activated by the on/off signal, for controlling an operational state of at least one of the computer and the plurality of electronic entertainment devices; and

a linkage for communicating the on/off signal between the controller and the switch; and

a user account for maintaining the allotment of usage of time assigned to the user and assignment of the user's plurality of electronic entertainment devices, the account accessible by the software;

wherein the user's plurality of electronic entertainment devices actual usage is compared with the allotment of time, a warning sequence is initiated when a total of the user's actual usage time of the computer and the plurality of electronic entertainment devices is approaching the user's allotment of usage time, and the switch changes the operational state to off upon a predetermined comparison value.

13. The apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein the apparatus further comprises at least one of:

a memory, containing at least one of the software and the allotment of usage time; and

a configurable database, containing at least one of the software and the allotment of usage time.

14. The apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein the switch further comprises:

a sensor capable of determining whether a power flow to at least one of the computer and the plurality of electronic entertainment devices has been terminated.

15. The apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein the linkage for communicating the on/off signal is at least one of a power line wire, a low voltage twisted pair wire, a coax cable, an infrared signal, a RF signal, and a fiber optic cable.

16. The apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein the linkage for communicating the on/off signal is accomplished by at least one of an X Window System protocol and architecture, a Consumer Electronic bus (CEBus) communication standard and protocol, a Bluetooth wireless specification, an IEEE 802 standard, a TCP/IP protocol suite, an Ethernet protocol and architecture, a WiFi protocol and architecture, and a Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP).

17. The apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein the allotment of usage time is predetermined.

18. The apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein the on/off signal is originated when the allotment of usage time is equal to or exceeds the actual usage time of the computer and the plurality of electronic entertainment devices.

19. The apparatus according to claim 12 , the apparatus further comprising:

a time tracker that is resident on at least one of a computer, a digital video recorder, a stand-alone box, a television, and a video console.

20. The apparatus according to claim 12 wherein the switch is a microchip mechanism.
