Abstract

Accepting a third party news article submission is disclosed. A first submission, including a first URL of a first news article that is different from a second URL of a previously accepted second news article submission, is received. One or more automated checks are performed on at least a portion of the first submission. Whether to accept the first submission is automatically determined based at least in part on the performed checks.

Claims (62)

1. A method of accepting a third party content contribution submission, the method comprising:

receiving a first submission from a first user, wherein the first submission includes a first uniform resource locator of a first content item;

receiving, at a time subsequent to the first submission, a second submission from a second user, wherein the second submission includes a second uniform resource locator of a second content item;

performing one or more automated checks on at least a portion of the second submission, including performing a duplicate check to determine whether the second submission is potentially a duplicate of the first submission;

if it is determined that the second submission is potentially a duplicate of the first submission, prompting the second user with an indication of the first submission, wherein said prompting comprises:

displaying a list of previous submissions that are potential duplicates of the second submission, including the first submission; and

displaying an actionable control for initiating a digg preference event regarding one of the previous submissions; and

if it is determined that the second submission is not potentially a duplicate of the first submission, accepting the second submission based on an identity of the second user, wherein said accepting includes:

identifying a length of time the second user has been a registered user of a site at which the second submission is received; and

determining whether the second user previously submitted inappropriate content to the site.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising storing at least a portion of the first content item.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein performing one or more checks includes obtaining a copy of the first content item and performing a duplicate check against the obtained copy of the first content item and a second content item associated with the second submission.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein a copy of the first content item is obtained by visiting the first uniform resource locator and capturing information located there.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein performing one or more checks includes determining whether the second submission appears on a URL block list.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein performing one or more checks includes determining whether the second uniform resource locator is valid.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising causing at least a portion of the second submission to be posted to a blog.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising causing at least a portion of the second submission to be posted to a website.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising receiving a third submission via a news feed.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the first submission is received via a browser plugin.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the first submission is received via a third party interface.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the first submission includes a summary written by a party other than the article's author.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the first content item is in a human readable format.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the first content item is a podcast.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the content item is one or more of an image, a video, a sound, a song, a product, and a service.

16. A system for accepting a third party content contribution submission, including:

a processor; and

a memory coupled with the processor, wherein the memory is configured to provide the processor with instructions which when executed cause the processor to:

receive a first submission from a first user, wherein the first submission includes a first uniform resource locator of a first content item;

receive, at a time subsequent to the first submission, a second submission from a second user, wherein the second submission includes a second uniform resource locator of a second content item;

perform one or more automated checks on at least a portion of the second submission, including performing a duplicate check to determine whether the second submission is potentially a duplicate of the first submission;

if it is determined that the second submission is potentially a duplicate of the first submission, prompt the second user with an indication of the first submission, wherein said prompting comprises:

displaying a list of previous submissions that are potential duplicates of the second submission, including the first submission; and

displaying an actionable control for initiating a digg preference event regarding one of the previous submissions; and

if it is determined that the second submission is not potentially a duplicate of the first submission, accepting the second submission based on an identity of the second user, wherein said accepting includes;

identifying a length of time the second user has been a registered user of a site at which the second submission is received; and

determining whether the second user previously submitted inappropriate content to the site.

17. The system of claim 16 wherein performing one or more checks includes determining whether the second submission appears on a URL block list.

18. The system of claim 16 wherein performing one or more checks includes determining whether the second uniform resource locator is valid.

19. The system of claim 16 wherein the processor is further configured to store at least a portion of the first content item.

20. The system of claim 16 wherein performing one or more checks includes obtaining a copy of the first content item and performing a duplicate check against the obtained copy of the first content item and a second content item associated with the second submission.

21. A computer program product for accepting a third party content contribution submission, the computer program product being embodied in a non-transitory computer readable medium and comprising computer executable instructions, which when executed cause a computer to:

receive a first submission from a first user, wherein the first submission includes a first uniform resource locator of a first content item;

receive, at a time subsequent to the first submission, a second submission from a second user, wherein the second submission includes a second uniform resource locator of a second content item;

perform one or more automated checks on at least a portion of the second submission, including performing a duplicate check to determine whether the second submission is potentially a duplicate of the first submission;

if it is determined that the second submission is potentially a duplicate of the first submission, prompt the second user with an indication of the first submission, wherein said prompting comprises:

displaying a list of previous submissions that are potential duplicates of the second submission, including the first submission; and

displaying an actionable control for initiating a digg preference event regarding one of the previous submissions; and

if it is determined that the second submission is not potentially a duplicate of the first submission, accepting the second submission based on an identity of the second user, wherein said accepting includes:

identifying a length of time the second user has been a registered user of a site at which the second submission is received; and

determining whether the second user previously submitted inappropriate content to the site.

22. A computer program product as recited in claim 21 wherein the one or more checks includes determining whether the second submission appears on a URL block list.

23. A computer program product as recited in claim 21 wherein performing one or more checks includes determining whether the second uniform resource locator is valid.

24. A computer program product as recited in claim 21 wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause a computer to store at least a portion of the first content item.

25. A computer program product as recited in claim 21 wherein performing one or more checks includes obtaining a copy of the first content item and performing a duplicate check against the obtained copy of the first content item and a second content item associated with the second submission.

26. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, prior to performing the duplicate check:

silently rejecting the second submission, wherein the silent rejection includes displaying to the second user a false indication of acceptance of the second submission.

27. The method of claim 5 , further comprising, if it is determined that the second submission appears on the URL block list:

displaying to the second user a false system error.

28. The system of claim 16 , wherein the memory is further configured to provide the processor with instructions that, when executed, cause the processor to:

silently reject the second submission prior to performing the duplicate check, wherein the silent rejection includes displaying to the second user a false indication of acceptance of the second submission.

29. A computer program product as recited in claim 21 wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause a computer to:

silently reject the second submission prior to performing the duplicate check, wherein the silent rejection includes displaying to the second user a false indication of acceptance of the second submission.
