Abstract

A method for refilling a removable inkjet cartridge including the steps of: mating the removable inkjet cartridge to a complementary inkjet cradle, mating a refill cartridge to the removable inkjet cartridge, verifying the authenticity of the removable inkjet cartridge, verifying the authenticity of the refill cartridge; and subsequently operating the cradle on the basis of the verification steps.

Claims (14)

1. A system for refilling a removable inkjet cartridge, the system comprising:

a range of inkjet cartridges configured to operate at more than one print speed, each of the inkjet cartridges having a printhead and an authentication device for verifying the inkjet cartridge;

a printer body for receiving any cartridge from the range, the printer body having a media feed system for feeding media past the printhead in the cartridge at a media feed speed corresponding to the print speed of the cartridge;

a range refill cartridges for refilling corresponding inkjet cartridges within the range of inkjet cartridges such that some of the refill cartridges are not suitable for use with some of the inkjet cartridges, each of the refill cartridges having a verification device for authenticating the refill cartridge; wherein,

the printer body has an controller for controlling its operation, and a connector for establishing a connection between the controller and the inkjet cartridge and the refill cartridge such that the controller sets one or more operating parameters of the printer body in response to the controller's verification or otherwise of an inkjet cartridge or refill cartridge being used with the printer body.

2. A system according to claim 1 wherein the printer body has a cradle for receiving the inkjet cartridge, and the connector has electrical contacts in the cradle for communication between the authentication device of the inkjet cartridge and a controller of said cradle.

3. A system according to claim 1 wherein each of the inkjet cartridges have contacts that mate with complementary contacts on each of the refill cartridges such that during use the controller is electrically connected to the authentication device of the refill cartridge via the inkjet cartridge.

4. A system according to claim 1 wherein one of the operating parameters is an indicator informing a user of a failure to authenticate either the refill cartridge or the inkjet cartridge.

5. A printer body for receiving any one of a range of inkjet cartridges configured to operate at more than one print speed, each of the inkjet cartridges having a printhead and an authentication device for verifying the inkjet cartridge, each of the inkjet cartridges being adapted to be refilled by a corresponding refill cartridge selected from a range of refill cartridges, such that some of the refill cartridges are not suitable for use with some of the inkjet cartridges, and each of the refill cartridges having a verification device for authenticating the refill cartridge, the printer body comprising:

a media feed system for feeding media past the printhead in the cartridge at a media feed speed corresponding to the print speed of the cartridge;

a controller for controlling its operation; and,

a connector for establishing a connection between the controller and the inkjet cartridge and the refill cartridge such that the controller sets one or more operating parameters of the printer body in response to the controller's verification or otherwise of an inkjet cartridge or refill cartridge being used with the printer body.

6. A printer body according to claim 5 wherein the controller is located within a cradle of said printer body and coupled to electrical contacts mounted in the cradle for establishing electrical communication with said authenticity devices.

7. A printer body according to claim 5 , wherein the authenticity devices comprise integrated circuits.
