Abstract

Disclosed are coolants comprising brazed metal corrosion inhibitors. In one embodiment, the disclosed brazed metal corrosion inhibitor will comprise a polycarboxylic acid functional compound having the structure: wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , and R 4 are each independently selected from the group consisting of H, OH, COOH, C 1 -C 10 alkyl groups, glycol esters, anhydride groups, —COOM, and combinations thereof, wherein M is at least one of H, alkali metal ions, alkali earth metal ions, NH4 + , amines, imidazoline, polyalcohol esters, C1 to C12 alkyl groups, and combinations thereof; wherein (1) at least three of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , and R 4 contain the group —COOM, wherein M is defined above; or (2) at least two of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , and R 4 contain an anhydride group, and at least one of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , and R 4 contain the group —COOM, wherein M is defined above.

Claims (38)

1. A corrosion inhibiting coolant for inhibiting corrosion in brazed aluminum surfaces comprising residual flux agent, said coolant comprising:

10% to 99% by weight of a freezing point depressant; and

an acid functional corrosion inhibiting component comprising a brazed metal corrosion inhibitor comprising a polycarboxylic acid functional compound having the structure:

wherein R 1 , R 2 , and R 4 are each independently selected from the group consisting of H, OH, COOH, C 1 -C 10 alkyl groups, glycol esters, anhydride groups, COOM, and combinations thereof, wherein M is at least one of alkali metal ions, alkali earth metal ions, NH4 + , amines, imidazoline, polyalcohol esters, C1 to C12 alkyl groups, and combinations thereof;

wherein R 3 is H or COOH

with the proviso that:

at least two of R 1 , R 2 , and R 4 contain an anhydride group, and at least one of R 1 , R 2 , and R 4 contain the group —COOM, wherein M is defined above.

2. The coolant of claim 1 , wherein the polycarboxylic acid functional compound comprises 10% to 100% by weight of the acid functional corrosion inhibiting component.

3. The coolant of claim 1 , wherein said acid functional corrosion inhibiting component comprises from about 0.1 weight % to about 10 weight % of the total coolant weight.

4. The coolant of claim 1 , wherein said acid functional corrosion inhibiting component comprises about 1 weight % to about 5 weight % of the total coolant weight.

5. The coolant of claim 1 , wherein said acid functional corrosion inhibiting component comprises about 2 weight % to about 4 weight % of the total coolant weight.

The coolant of claim 1 , wherein the corrosion inhibiting coolant further comprises an additive selected from the group consisting of colorants, dispersants, antiscalants, wetting agents, biocides, pH adjusting agent, buffering agents, and combinations comprising at least one of the forgoing additives.

The coolant of claim 1 , further comprising at least one alcohol selected from the group consisting of methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, furfurol, furfuryl alcohol, tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, ethoxylated furfuryl alcohol, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, 1,2,-propylene glycol, 1,3,-propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, butylenes glycol, glycerol, glycerol-1,2-dimethyl ether, glycerol-1,3 dimethyl ether, monoethylether of glycerol, sorbitol, 1,2,6-hexanetriol, trimethylpropane, alkoxy alkanols and mixtures thereof.

8. The coolant of claim 1 , further comprising a corrosion inhibitor different from the polycarboxylic acid functional corrosion inhibiting component.

9. The coolant of claim 8 , wherein the corrosion inhibitor different from the polycarboxylic acid functional corrosion inhibiting component is a copper alloy corrosion inhibitor.

10. The coolant of claim 9 , wherein the copper alloy corrosion inhibitor is an azole compound.

11. The coolant of claim 8 , wherein the corrosion inhibitor different from the polycarboxylic acid functional corrosion inhibiting component is an aluminum-ferrous metal corrosion inhibitor.

The coolant of claim 11 wherein the aluminum-ferrous metal corrosion inhibitor is at least one of a silicate, a carboxylate, a phosphate, a borate, a molybdate, a nitrate, a nitrite, an alkali metal, a alkaline earth metal, ammonium, an amine salt, or a combination of one or more of the foregoing.

13. The coolant of claim 8 , comprising about 0.01% to about 4.0% of the corrosion inhibitor different from the polycarboxylic acid functional corrosion inhibiting component.

14. A corrosion inhibiting coolant for inhibiting corrosion in brazed aluminum surfaces comprising residual flux agent, said coolant comprising:

10% to 99% by weight of a freezing point depressant; and

an acid functional corrosion inhibiting component comprising a brazed metal corrosion inhibitor comprising a polycarboxylic acid functional compound having the structure:

wherein R 1 , R 3 , and R 4 are each independently selected from the group consisting of H, OH, COOH, C 1 -C 10 alkyl groups, glycol esters, anhydride groups, COOM, and combinations thereof, wherein M is at least one of alkali metal ions, alkali earth metal ions, NH4 + , amines, imidazoline, polyalcohol esters, C1 to C12 alkyl groups, and combinations thereof;

R 2 is COOH;

with the proviso that:

at least two of R 1 , R 3 , and R 4 contain an anhydride group, and at least one of R 1 , R 3 , and R 4 contain the group —COOM, wherein M is defined above.

15. The coolant of claim 14 , wherein the polycarboxylic acid functional compound comprises 10% to 100% by weight of the acid functional corrosion inhibiting component.

16. The coolant of claim 14 , wherein said acid functional corrosion inhibiting component comprises from about 0.1 weight % to about 10 weight % of the total coolant weight.

17. The coolant of claim 14 , wherein said acid functional corrosion inhibiting component comprises about 1 weight % to about 5 weight % of the total coolant weight.

18. The coolant of claim 14 , wherein said acid functional corrosion inhibiting component comprises about 2 weight % to about 4 weight % of the total coolant weight.

The coolant of claim 14 , wherein the corrosion inhibiting coolant further comprises an additive selected from the group consisting of colorants, dispersants, antiscalants, wetting agents, biocides, pH adjusting agent, buffering agents, and combinations comprising at least one of the forgoing additives.

The coolant of claim 14 , further comprising at least one alcohol selected from the group consisting of methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, furfurol, furfuryl alcohol, tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, ethoxylated furfuryl alcohol, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, 1,2,-propylene glycol, 1,3,-propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, butylenes glycol, glycerol, glycerol-1,2-dimethyl ether, glycerol-1,3 dimethyl ether, monoethylether of glycerol, sorbitol, 1,2,6-hexanetriol, trimethylpropane, alkoxy alkanols and mixtures thereof.

21. The coolant of claim 14 , further comprising a corrosion inhibitor different from the polycarboxylic acid functional corrosion inhibiting component.

22. The coolant of claim 21 , wherein the corrosion inhibitor different from the polycarboxylic acid functional corrosion inhibiting component is a copper alloy corrosion inhibitor.

23. The coolant of claim 22 , wherein the copper alloy corrosion inhibitor is an azole compound.

24. The coolant of claim 21 , wherein the corrosion inhibitor different from the polycarboxylic acid functional corrosion inhibiting component is an aluminum-ferrous metal corrosion inhibitor.

The coolant of claim 24 wherein the aluminum-ferrous metal corrosion inhibitor is at least one of a silicate, a carboxylate, a phosphate, a borate, a molybdate, a nitrate, a nitrite, an alkali metal, a alkaline earth metal, ammonium, an amine salt, or a combination of one or more of the foregoing.

26. The coolant of claim 21 , comprising about 0.01% to about 4.0% of the corrosion inhibitor different from the polycarboxylic acid functional corrosion inhibiting component.
