Abstract

For analyzing browsing taking place within the framework of a communication session carried by at least one communication interface, said communication session comprising at least one transfer protocol transaction involving a resource locator: a trace is captured on said communication interface; at least one transaction is identified from the trace and each identified transaction is memorized with associated information; each identified transaction is associated with the session it belongs to; for each session, constructing a graph, each node of the graph representing a resource locator and each link of the graph, connecting two nodes, representing a relationship between said two nodes, said relationship relating to a transaction associated with said session and involving the resource locator represented by at least one of said two nodes; and browsing information is derived from at least one of the constructed graphs.

Claims (48)

1 . Method for analyzing browsing, said browsing taking place within the framework of at least one communication session carried by at least one communication interface, said at least one communication session comprising at least one transfer protocol transaction involving a resource locator, the method comprising the following steps:

/a/ capturing a trace on said communication interface;

/b/ identifying at least one transaction from the trace and memorizing each identified transaction with associated information;

/c/ associating each identified transaction with the session it belongs to;

/d/ for each session, constructing a graph, each node of the graph representing a resource locator and each link of the graph, connecting two nodes, representing a relationship between said two nodes, said relationship relating to a transaction associated with said session and involving the resource locator represented by at least one of said two nodes; and

/e/ deriving browsing information from at least one of the constructed graphs.

Method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the information associated with the transactions comprise indications of at least some of: a status, a content, a user-agent, a time stamp, a response time of a server, a time elapsed between a request and an acknowledgement, a time for starting a connection, a time for ending a connection, a connection identifier and a rank inside the connection.

3 . Method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the information associated with the transactions comprises information of communication resource on which the transactions are carried out.

4 . Method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the browsing information derived from at least one of the constructed graphs comprises performance indicators from an end user point of view.

5 . Method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the browsing information derived from at least one of the constructed graphs comprises at least one of: a download status, a download time, a download length, an inter-transaction time and a download reading time.

6 . Method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the browsing information derived from at least one of the constructed graphs comprises browser characteristics.

7 . Method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the browsing information derived from at least one of the constructed graphs comprises an impatience function defined as the proportion of users who stop a download after a number of seconds.

8 . Method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the browsing information derived from at least one of the constructed graphs is statistically obtained in relation with a plurality of users.

9 . Method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the browsing information derived from at least one of the constructed graphs is obtained for one or a predetermined group of users.

10 . Method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising a step of detecting a troubleshooting or validating the configuration in a communication system including said communication interface, from said derived browsing information.

11 . Method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising a step of defining a transaction based billing from said derived browsing information.

Computer program product comprising code instructions for carrying out the following steps, when it is loaded and executed by computer means, said steps relating to browsing taking place within the framework of at least one communication session carried by at least one communication interface, said at least one communication session comprising at least one transfer protocol transaction involving a resource locator:

/a/ capturing a trace on said communication interface;

/b/ identifying at least one transaction from the trace and memorizing each identified transaction with associated information;

/c/ associating each identified transaction with the session it belongs to;

/d/ for each session, constructing a graph, each node of the graph representing a resource locator and each link of the graph, connecting two nodes, representing a relationship between said two nodes, said relationship relating to a transaction associated with said session and involving the resource locator represented by at least one of said two nodes; and

/e/ deriving browsing information from at least one of the constructed graphs.

Computer program product as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the information associated with the transactions comprise indications of at least some of: a status, a content, a user-agent, a time stamp, a response time of a server, a time elapsed between a request and an acknowledgement, a time for starting a connection, a time for ending a connection, a connection identifier and a rank inside the connection.

14 . Computer program product as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the information associated with the transactions comprises information of communication resource on which the transactions are carried out.

15 . Computer program product as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the browsing information derived from at least one of the constructed graphs comprises performance indicators from an end user point of view.

16 . Computer program product as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the browsing information derived from at least one of the constructed graphs comprises at least one of: a download status, a download time, a download length, an inter-transaction time and a download reading time.

17 . Computer program product as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the browsing information derived from at least one of the constructed graphs comprises browser characteristics.

18 . Computer program product as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the browsing information derived from at least one of the constructed graphs comprises an impatience function defined as the proportion of users who stop a download after a number of seconds.

19 . Computer program product as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the browsing information derived from at least one of the constructed graphs is statistically obtained in relation with a plurality of users.

20 . Computer program product as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the browsing information derived from at least one of the constructed graphs is obtained for one or a predetermined group of users.

21 . Computer program product as claimed in claim 12 , arranged for carrying out a further step of detecting a troubleshooting or validating the configuration in a communication system including said communication interface, from said derived browsing information.

22 . Computer program product as claimed in claim 12 , arranged for carrying out a further step of defining a transaction based billing from said derived browsing information.

Device for analyzing browsing, said browsing taking place within the framework of at least one communication session carried by at least one communication interface, said at least one communication session comprising at least one transfer protocol transaction involving a resource locator, the device comprising:

/a/ means for capturing a trace on said communication interface;

/b/ means for identifying at least one transaction from the trace and memorizing each identified transaction with associated information;

/c/ means for associating each identified transaction with the session it belongs to;

/d/ means for, for each session, constructing a graph, each node of the graph representing a resource locator and each link of the graph, connecting two nodes, representing a relationship between said two nodes, said relationship relating to a transaction associated with said session and involving the resource locator represented by at least one of said two nodes; and

/e/ means for deriving browsing information from at least one of the constructed graphs.

Device as claimed in claim 23 , wherein the information associated with the transactions comprise indications of at least some of: a status, a content, a user-agent, a time stamp, a response time of a server, a time elapsed between a request and an acknowledgement, a time for starting a connection, a time for ending a connection, a connection identifier and a rank inside the connection.

32 . Device as claimed in claim 23 , further comprising means for detecting a troubleshooting or validating the configuration in a communication system including said communication interface, from said derived browsing information.

33 . Device as claimed in claim 23 , further comprising means for defining a transaction based billing from said derived browsing information.
