Abstract

Methods of treating humans or animals having dysfunctional oral mucosal tissue are disclosed which include topically administering cyclosporine A, salts thereof and/or mixtures thereof in an oral cavity of the human or animal.

Claims (20)

1. A method of treating dysfunctional oral mucosal tissue in a human or animal, the method comprising: topically administering a therapeutically effective amount of a cyclosporine component selected from the group consisting of cyclosporin A, salts thereof and mixtures thereof, to dysfunctional mucosal tissue in an oral cavity of a human or animal, thereby treating the dysfunctional mucosal tissue.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the human or animal has dry mouth syndrome, and the administering step is effective to treat the dry mouth syndrome.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the human or animal has dry mouth syndrome resulting at least in part from at least one of mucin deficiency and immune inflammation salivary gland secretion variation, and the administering step is effective to treat the dry mouth syndrome.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the dysfunctional mucosal tissue at least in part results in the human or animal having a condition selected from the group consisting of oral submucous fibrosis, oral nevi, and cancers of the oral mucosa.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the cyclosporine component comprises cyclosporin A.

6. A method of treating dysfunctional oral mucosal tissue in a human or animal, the method comprising: topically administering a composition containing a therapeutically effective amount of a cyclosporine component selected from the group consisting of cyclosporin A, salts thereof and mixtures thereof, to dysfunctional mucosal tissue in an oral cavity of a human or animal, thereby treating the dysfunctional mucosal tissue.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the cyclosporine component is present in the composition in an amount in a range from about 0.01% to about 20% by weight of the composition.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein the cyclosporine component is present in the composition in an amount in a range from about 0.03% to about 15% by weight of the composition.

9. The method of claim 6 wherein the cyclosporine component is present in the composition in an amount in a range from about 5.0% to about 10% by weight of the composition.

10. The method of claim 6 wherein the composition includes a hydrophobic component.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the cyclosporine component is solubilized in the hydrophobic component.

12. The method of claim 10 wherein the hydrophobic component comprises a discontinuous phase in the composition.

13. The method of claim 10 wherein the hydrophobic component is present in an amount of about 1.0% by weight of the composition.

14. The method of claim 10 wherein the hydrophobic component is present in an amount of 1.5% by weight of the composition.

15. The method of claim 10 wherein the hydrophobic component comprises at least one oily material.

16. The method of claim 10 wherein the hydrophobic component is a material selected from the group consisting of vegetable oils, animal oils, mineral oils, synthetic oils and mixtures thereof.

17. The method of claim 10 wherein the hydrophobic component comprises castor oil.

18. The method of claim 6 wherein the cyclosporine component is in combination with a hydrophilic solvent phase and at least one surfactant.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein the composition does not contain a lipophilic solvent.

20. The method of claim 6 wherein the cyclosporine component is cyclosporine A.
