Abstract

A contact lens formed from a transparent material having front and rear surfaces, wherein the rear surface has a base curve which is adapted to fit an eye of a wearer of the lens. The front surface has a central zone which has two different cylindrical curvatures which generate first and second central-zone refractive powers differing by an astigmatic factor. The front surface also has an outer zone with two different cylindrical curvatures which generate third and fourth central-zone refractive powers differing by the astigmatic factor, and an intermediary region, intermediate the central zone and the outer zone, having one or more contiguous intermediate zones, each intermediate zone having cylindrical curvatures differing by the astigmatic factor. The refractive powers from the central zone to the outer zone form monotonic progressions of decreasing values.

Claims (20)

1. A contact lens, comprising a transparent material having front and rear surfaces,

wherein the rear surface comprises a base curve which is adapted to fit an eye of a wearer of the lens, and wherein the front surface comprises:

a central zone which, together with the base curve, is configured to generate a central zone single-valued refractive power;

an outer zone, which has the form of an outer annulus surrounding the central zone, and which, together with the base curve, is configured to generate an outer zone single-valued refractive power which is less than the central zone single-valued refractive power; and

an intermediary region, which has the form of an inner annulus intermediate the central zone and the outer zone, the intermediary region comprising one or more contiguous intermediate zones which are configured, together with the base curve, to generate respective one or more intermediate zone single-valued refractive powers defining a monotonic progression of decreasing refractive power from the central zone to the outer zone, so that the central zone, the one or more intemediate zones, and the outer zone are separated from each other by edges, at least one of which is non-circular.

2. The contact lens according to claim 1 , wherein the central zone single-valued refractive power is selected to correct near vision of the wearer.

3. The contact lens according to claim 1 , wherein the outer zone single-valued refractive power is between approximately 1 diopter and approximately 2.5 diopters less than the central zone single-valued refractive power.

4. The contact lens according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one non-circular edge is oval, and wherein an axis of the oval is selected to enhance peripheral vision of the wearer in a direction defined by the axis.

5. The contact lens according to claim 1 , wherein at least one the edges is circular.

6. The contact lens according to claim 1 , wherein the edges separating the zones comprise internal edges, and wherein the outer zone has an external edge that is circular.

7. A method for forming a contact lens, comprising:

forming on a transparent material a rear surface comprising a base curve which is adapted to fit an eye of a wearer of the lens; and

forming on the transparent material a front surface comprising:

a central zone which, together with the base curve, is configured to generate a central zone single-valued refractive power, an outer zone, which has the form of an outer annulus surrounding the central zone, and which, together with the base curve, is configured to generate an outer zone single-valued refractive power which is less than the central zone single-valued refractive power, and

an intermediary region, which has the form of an inner annulus intermediate the central zone and the outer zone, the intermediary region comprising one or more contiguous intermediate zones which are configured, together with the base curve, to generate respective one or more intermediate zone single-valued refractive powers defining a monotonic progression of decreasing refractive power from the central zone to the outer zone, so that the central zone, the one or more intermediate zones, and the outer zone are separated from each other by edges, at least one of which is non-circular.

8. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the central zone single-valued refractive power is selected to correct near vision of the wearer.

9. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the outer zone single-valued refractive power is between approximately 1 diopter and approximately 2.5 diopters less than the central zone single-valued refractive power.

10. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the at least one non-circular edge is oval, and comprising selecting an axis of the oval so as to enhance peripheral vision of the wearer in a direction defined by the axis.

11. The method according to claim 7 , wherein at least one of the edges is circular.

12. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the edges separating the zones comprise internal edges, and wherein the outer zone has an external edge that is circular.
