Abstract

A self-compensating hydrostatic (pressurized fluid film) linear bearing that maintains a fluid gap between a carriage and a rail when relative forces are applied. The geometric shape of the rail and mating carriage enable the bearing to have very high stiffness and load capacity without exessive detrimental carriage deformation. The carriages contain bearing grooves and lands which control and use fluid pressure to provide a very high degree of restoring force in response to changes in the fluid gap. The fluid emanating from the bearing gap is prevented from immediately leaking from the bearing carriage, and is instead routed back to the source from which it is pumped, thereby sealing the bearing carriage and simplifying the handling of the lubricating fluid. The hydrostatic bearing is particularly designed to be compact and to be bolt-for-bolt compatible with conventional linear bearings.

Claims (34)

1. A hydrostatic bearing pad, comprising:

a compensating groove;

an adjacent pocket groove enclosing therein a first planar area constructed and arranged to resist a flow of pressurized fluid when said hydrostatic bearing pad is in a load supporting position relative to another surface;

a second planar area interposed between said compensating groove and said pocket groove, said second planar area being constructed and arranged to resist the flow of the pressurized fluid from said compensating groove to said adjacent pocket groove when said bearing pad is in the load supporting position relative to the other surface; and

a supply groove proximate to said compensating groove, said supply groove and said compensating groove being separated by a third planar area that is constructed and arranged to resist the flow of pressurized fluid from said supply groove to said compensating groove;

wherein the supply groove is entirely disposed on a planar surface of the bearing pad, and

wherein the pocket groove separates the first and second planar areas,

wherein the compensating groove and pocket groove are not separated from each other by a drain groove, and

wherein the supply groove is at least partially interposed between the compensating groove and an edge of the bearing pad.

2. The hydrostatic bearing pad of claim 1 , wherein the second planar area does not include grooves between the compensating groove and the pocket groove.

3. The hydrostatic bearing pad of claim 1 , wherein the pocket groove does not enclose therein the compensating groove or supply groove.

4. The hydrostatic bearing pad of claim 1 , further comprising one or more drain grooves surrounding the first, second, and third planar areas, the supply groove, the compensating groove, and the pocket groove.

5. The hydrostatic bearing pad of claim 4 , further comprising a sealing structure surrounding the one or more drain grooves.

6. The hydrostatic bearing pad of claim 5 , further comprising a fluid return system operatively connected to the one or more drain grooves.

7. The hydrostatic bearing pad of claim 5 , further comprising a reservoir in fluid communication with the one or more drain grooves.

8. The hydrostatic bearing pad of claim 5 , wherein side portions of the sealing structure have a substantially upwardly-facing u-shaped cross-section.

9. The hydrostatic bearing pad of claim 4 , wherein at least one of the one or more drain grooves extends along the length of the bearing pad.

10. A hydrostatic bearing pad, comprising:

a planar surface that is constructed and arranged to resist the flow of pressurized fluid when in a load supporting position relative to another surface;

a compensating groove in the planar surface, the compensating groove being constructed and arranged to be in fluid communication with a pocket groove of another hydrostatic bearing pad;

a pocket groove in the planar surface, the pocket groove being constructed and arranged to be in fluid communication with a compensating groove of the another hydrostatic bearing pad;

a supply groove in the planar surface, the supply groove being proximate to said compensating groove and being constructed and arranged to receive pressurized fluid from a source of pressurized fluid; and

one or more drain grooves surrounding the compensating groove, the pocket groove, the supply groove, and the planar surface;

wherein the planar surface separates the compensating groove, pocket groove, supply groove, and one or more drain grooves from each other,

wherein the pocket groove does not surround the compensating groove or supply groove,

wherein the planar surface completely surrounds the supply groove,

wherein the planar surface does not include a drain groove that separates the pocket groove from the supply groove, and

wherein the supply groove is at least partially interposed between the compensating groove and the one or more drain grooves.

11. The hydrostatic bearing pad of claim 10 , further comprising a fluid return system operatively connected to the one or more drain grooves.

12. The hydrostatic bearing pad of claim 10 , wherein a position of the supply groove reduces a leakage path between the compensating groove and an outer edge of said planar surface.

13. The hydrostatic bearing pad of claim 10 , wherein the supply groove prevents fluid from leaking from the compensating groove to an outer edge of said planar surface.

14. The hydrostatic bearing pad of claim 10 , further comprising a sealing structure surrounding the one or more drain grooves.

15. The hydrostatic bearing pad of claim 14 , wherein the sealing structure follows a non-planar path around the one or more drain grooves.

16. The hydrostatic bearing pad of claim 10 , wherein the supply groove is at least partially interposed between the compensating groove and an outer edge of said planar surface.
