Abstract

A method for forming flanged end of an inner conductor of a coaxial resonator at one end of the conductive body. The flange is formed integral to the conductive body by flaring the end of the conductive body. The size and shape of the flange are selected to achieve a desired capacitance surface area for use in a resonator. A combination of expanding tool and calibration tool are used to control the size and shape of the flange that will be formed on the end of the conductive body.

Claims (12)

1. A method of making a flanged body for use in a resonator, the method comprising:

placing a conductive body, having a hollow center, within a guiding tool;

inserting a first end of an expanding tool within the hollow center of the conductive body, the expanding tool first end having a first diameter and a second end of the expanding tool having a second diameter, wherein the second diameter is larger than the first diameter and a surface extends from the first diameter to the second diameter;

inserting the expanding tool second end within a center opening of a calibration tool, wherein the calibration tool center opening comprises a collar forming a stepped surface;

forming a flange on a first end of the conductive body by pressing the conductive body over the expanding tool, causing the first end of the conductive body to expand onto the stepped surface against the collar of the calibration tool to produce the flange of a desired size to achieve a desired capacitance surface area for use in the resonator; and

finishing the conductive body first end including the further steps of: withdrawing the conductive body from the calibration tool; removing the expanding tool from the calibration tool; and placing back the flanged conductive body end onto the stepped surface inside the collar of the calibration tool to produce a flange having substantially right angle transition from a length of the conductive body to a flange surface.

2. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the conductive body is generally cylindrical.

3. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the conductive body is an extrusion.

4. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the conductive body is constructed from copper.

5. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the conductive body is constructed from soft steel.

6. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the conductive body is constructed from brass.

7. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the conductive body is constructed from aluminum.
