Abstract

A simulator simulates routing system protocols to build routing tables corresponding to a modeled network, and a comparator compares the routing tables in the actual network to these simulator-created routing tables. Because the modeled system represents a fault-free version of the actual system, and assuming that the modeled routing system protocols are representative of the algorithms used in the actual routers, these simulator-produced routing tables will represent the ‘ideal’ routing tables that should be present in the routers of the actual network. By querying each router in the actual network for its routing table and comparing each routing table to the corresponding simulator-produced routing table, any differences from the ‘ideal’ can be identified.

Claims (39)

1. A method comprising:

querying, by a routing validation machine, a router in a network to obtain a first routing table from the router,

simulating a model of the network to obtain a second routing table corresponding to a model of the router,

identifying, by the routing validation machine, differences, if any, between the first routing table and the second routing table, and

presenting, by the routing validation machine, information based on the differences,

wherein the first and second routing tables include a next hop entry and a metric entry for each of a plurality of destination prefixes, and identifying the differences includes identifying differences between the next hop entries and the metric entries of the first and second routing tables.

2. The method of claim 1 , including

querying a plurality of other routers in the network to obtain a plurality of other first routing tables from the plurality of other routers,

wherein

the simulating of the model of the network provides a plurality of other second routing tables corresponding to models of the plurality of other routers, and

the identifying of the differences includes identifying differences, if any, between each of the plurality of first routing tables and each of the plurality of second routing tables.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein each router of the plurality of other routers includes one or more associated routing protocols, and each model of the models of the plurality of other routers includes a routing table update algorithm corresponding to each of the one or more associated routing protocols.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the router includes one or more associated routing protocols, and the model of the router includes a routing table update algorithm corresponding to each of the one or more associated routing protocols.

5. A method comprising:

querying, by a routing validation machine, a plurality of routers in a network at a first time to obtain a plurality of first routing tables from the plurality of routers,

querying, by the routing validation machine, the plurality of routers in the network at a second time to obtain a plurality of second routing tables from the plurality of routers,

identifying, by the routing validation machine, differences, if any, between each of the plurality of first routing tables and each of the plurality of the second routing tables, and

presenting, by the routing validation machine, information based on the differences,

wherein the first and second routing tables include a next hop entry and a metric entry for each of a plurality of destination prefixes, and identifying the differences includes identifying differences between the next hop entries and the metric entries of the first and second routing tables.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of routers includes a plurality of associated routing protocols.

7. A method comprising:

simulating a plurality of modeled routers in a network at a first time to obtain a plurality of first routing tables from the plurality of modeled routers,

simulating the plurality of routers in the network at a second time to obtain a plurality of second routing tables from the plurality of modeled routers,

identifying, by a routing validation machine, differences, if any, between each of the plurality of first routing tables and each of the plurality of the second routing tables, and

presenting, by the routing validation machine, information based on the differences,

wherein the first and second routing tables include a next hop entry and a metric entry for each of a plurality of destination prefixes, and identifying the differences includes identifying differences between the next hop entries and the metric entries of the first and second routing tables.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of modeled routers includes a plurality of associated routing protocols.

9. A system comprising:

a controller that is configured to query a router in a network to obtain a first routing table from the router,

a simulator that is configured to simulate a model of the network to obtain a second routing table corresponding to a model of the router, and

a processor that is configured to identify differences, if any, between the first routing table and the second routing table,

wherein the first and second routing tables include a next hop entry and a metric entry for each of a plurality of destination prefixes, and the processor is configured to identify differences between the next hop entries and the metric entries of the first and second routing tables.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein

the controller is configured to query a plurality of other routers in the network to obtain a plurality of other first routing tables from the plurality of other routers,

the model of the network includes models of the other routers in the network, and

the simulator is configured to obtain a plurality of other second routing tables corresponding to models of the plurality of other routers, and

the processor is configured to identify differences, if any, between each of the plurality of first routing tables and each of the plurality of second routing tables.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein each router of the plurality of other routers includes one or more associated routing protocols, and each model of the models of the plurality of other routers includes a routing table update algorithm corresponding to each of the one or more associated routing protocols.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the router includes one or more associated routing protocols, and the model of the router includes a routing table update algorithm corresponding to each of the one or more associated routing protocols.
